SAG Awards: The Movie Nominees and Our Reactions

I will never understand why one awards show would announce their nominees two days after another awards show announces theirs. Unless the SAG Awards are simply trying to steal a teeny bit of the Golden Globes' spotlight? C'mon, guys -- that's cheap. And if you want to shine, all you have to do is avoid making any nominations that are every bit as ridiculous as those made by the foreign press. You almost succeeded, although I will give you props for not nominating anybody from The Tourist.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Jeff Bridges, True Grit
Robert Duvall, Get Low
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours

Like I figured, American voters are more excited for Jeff Bridges' cowboy role and Robert Duvall's cantankerous hermit role than the foreign press. Unfortunately, that cost Mark Wahlberg a nomination, making him the only Fighter cast member who didn't get nominated. Also, Ryan Gosling, but at least he still has his meme. And I'm not really missing anybody from the Globes' comedy category, really.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Hilary Swank, Conviction

Halle Berry and Michelle Williams were on the list for the Globes, but here their spots went to Bening and Swank. I blame the lack of a separate comedy category, as well as the lack of a decent Hilary Swank filter. Aside from Swank's presence for her role in a glorified Lifetime TV movie, I can't really find fault with the list -- it's solid.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right
Christian Bale, The Fighter
John Hawkes, Winter's Bone
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech

Oh, snap! Looks like the Screen Actors Guild isn't interested in giving Michael Douglas any sympathy awards for Wall Street 2. ("Sorry you felt like you had to make that movie, Mike.") Instead, they singled out Teardrop from Winter's Bone, who was indeed a total badass in that movie. ...This award is for being a badass, right? I'm on the fence about losing Andrew Garfield from Social Network, but gaining Ruffalo makes it a wash.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams, The Fighter
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit

I'm pretty psyched that Mattie Ross from True Grit got a nomination, since Steinfeld nails the antiquated dialogue and does some mean horse-trading as the young Coen Brothers heroine. Only problem is, she's totally the lead. She's in every scene, and she's the main protagonist. But good for her, regardless. Mila Kunis, on the other hand, I still feel is getting a proximity nomination for being so close to such an awesome movie. Her performance wasn't anything we hadn't seen from her before.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Black Swan (Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder)
The Fighter (Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Jack McGee)
The Kids Are All Right (Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson)
The King's Speech (Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gambon, Guy Pearce, Derek Jacobi, Timothy Spall, Jennifer Ehle, Anthony Andrews)
The Social Network (Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, Justin Timberlake, Max Minghella, Josh Pence)

Can't really argue with this list. Winter's Bone didn't really have much of an ensemble, nor did True Grit, but if three people constituted a cast, I'd say get 'em up there. The cast of The King's Speech was pretty amazing, and they outnumber everybody else, and their English accents were pretty good, so I say give it to them.
