Oscars 2011: The Winners

See how you are doing in your Oscar pool without having to sit through the neverending show.

Hall Pass: Another Heartwarmingly Filthy Farrelly Brothers Film

The Farrelly Brothers like to spice up their comedies with risque scenarios and shocking imagery, but I wish they'd spice up their comedies with some comedy. Because while there are a few great laughs in Hall Pass, a lot of time is spent on making the characters sympathetic and redeemable, and while that's normally a good thing, it's not the case when it means half of your funny movie isn't particularly funny. While I love a happy ending as much as the next guy, this movie had the potential to depict a total disaster, and a safe wrap-up leaves me wondering why I bothered watching it in the first place.

Singers We'd Like to See in the Bodyguard Remake, and the Men Who Guard Them

Can you believe it's been almost 20 years since The Bodyguard came out? Whitney Houston was a youngish 29, and not yet crazy, and Kevin Costner played the man hired to keep the threatened pop singer safe. Well, now plans to remake the movie have resurfaced, and Warner Bros. is looking to cast an international pop star in the lead role. While Rihanna was suggested for the part almost two years ago, nobody is attached to this new iteration, so we thought we'd envision how the story might be tailored to today's biggest stars, and who might be hired to protect them.

Superman Movie Adds Kevin Costner, But in What Role? And Why?

Kevin Costner has always done his best to let the world know how big a hero he is. Whether it was saving Native Americans, saving England or becoming a mailman-prophet, The Costner has always risen to his own sense of greatness. Well, now he's going to play second fiddle to the greatest hero of all, by taking a supporting role in the new Superman movie. Common sense points to him playing Pa Kent, the salt-of-the-Earth purveyor of folk wisdom that made Superman into what he is, which gives him bragging rights to everything his son does, but Pa isn't the only fiftysomething man in Clark Kent's life. Here are some other supporting Super-roles we'd like to see him mix it up with.

What's more interesting-- a good superhero or a villain with a heart of gold? Check out these DVDs to find out!

Unknown: Nice of Liam Neeson to Help Out This Lousy Movie By Being in It

Never one to miss out on Liam Neeson kicking the bejesus out of Europeans (almost as good as Jason Statham kicking the bejesus out of Los Angelenos!), naturally I was pumped about Unknown, the conspiracy thriller starring Neeson as an American in Berlin facing identity theft, a wife who disavows him and a whole mess of assassins. And while I left the theater more or less entertained, this movie's plot holes, logic problems and risibly tidy ending really detract from what could have been a great holdover until Taken 2. Unfortunately, it felt more like the direct-to-DVD sequel to Frantic.

I Am Number Four: A Deceptively Enjoyable Guilty Pleasure

Does this ever happen to you? Ever see a movie that is widely panned by not only critics, but by everyone else of sound mind and body that you know, and yet you still kind of loved it? Even though you know it's a manipulatively pandering piece of opportunistic garbage? It's embarrassing, but it happens sometimes, and it happened to me with I am Number Four. I'll attempt to explain why now.

Vanishing on 7th Street: Beware of Darkness, Ambiguity

Hayden Christensen. John Leguizamo. Thandie Newton. When I heard that three of my least favorite actors were going to be in a movie together, I knew I had to see it. Sure, it didn't have John Travolta or Katherine Heigl, but let's not get carried away, here. We don't want people to hurt themselves. The plot didn't even matter -- it looked like a sci-fi horror movie to me, and that's all I needed to know. As long as everyone got to over-act, and then be annoyingly glib with each other, I would be happy, and in that respect the film didn't disappoint. Unfortunately, the plot left a lot to be desired, and the cast spends the entire movie fighting off darkness and shadows with flashlights. Hayden Christensen once taught us to never underestimate the power of the dark side, but it's not enough to base an entire movie on.

Did no other movie want to compete with the runaway train that is Unstoppable this week? The DVD offerings are slim, to say the least.
