BLOGS
The movies have given us a lot of great male actor pairings: Newman and Redford, Pesci and De Niro, Gibson and Glover. And while nobody in Fast Five has the talent or charisma of any of those actors (okay, maybe Glover), I think it's time we officially add Diesel and Walker to that list. Just because this is the third time they've partnered up, on and off the racetrack, and you can't help but smile when you see them bro out. Also, they spend a lot of time in cars, and when a car has personality it helps make up for a lack of personality in the actor. But really, there are a ton of pairings in this movie that pop, mostly among the ragtag band of racers that assembles to rip off a Brazilian criminal, and seeing the relationships develop, even in a limited way, definitely adds to the otherwise adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. Here are some of my favorites:
Paul Walker and Vin Diesel
Now that Walker and Diesel are officially on the same side, since O'Conner busted Dom out of prison, they've got a fun camaraderie going on, with a little of the old rivalry. But that's tempered by the fact that O'Conner is getting pretty serious with Dom's sister Mia, which makes O'Conner like the little brother Dom never had.
Think: Tango and Cash
Vin Diesel and The Rock
It's hard to find someone who can grapple with Vin Diesel and make him look puny, but a completely ripped Dwayne Johnson will do it. As Agent Luke Hobbs, he relentlessly runs down the gang in Rio, then trades punches with Dom as they repeatedly throw each other through windows. The testosterone is so thick you can cut it with a machete.
Think: The Predator and Arnold Schwarzenegger
The Rock and Perspiration
I know they're in Rio, but nobody sweats as much as the Rock does in this film. He is literally dripping in all of his scenes. Whether that's a conscious choice to make his character look intense, I don't know, but it's laughably noticeable. In a good way.
Think: Rainforests and precipitation
Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson
As the only two black characters in the movie, these two have a rivalry-slash-bond right away, smack-talking each other from the moment they meet. Gibson's Roman is a lot flashier, but Ludacris's Tej is a lot smarter, which helps even things out.
Think: Will Smith and Kevin Kline in Wild Wild West.
Heists and Racing
These two go way back, but the use of cars goes above and beyond in this film, including a daring train robbery in which an off-roading flatbed truck is used to steal cars from a moving train. As the film that transitions the racing series into a less specialized, more widely appealing heist franchise, Fast Five is a pretty great example of both.
Think: The Italian Job meets The Transporter.
Sung Kang and Gal Gadot
The street-smart Han Lue takes an instant shine to Gadot's Israeli weapons expert, Gisele, and you think it's going to be the typical one-sided crush on a stone cold beauty, but when they begin to bond and she begins to flirt back, it's kind of a refreshing change from the usual movie clichés.
Think: Brad and Angelina in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Tego Calderon and Don Omar
A Puerto Rican rapper and a Puerto Rican Reggaeton singer, the two are constantly arguing in Spanish as they go about performing their roles in the heist.
Think: Scott Caan and Casey Affleck in the Ocean's movies.
Cars and IMAX
Not only does it better show off all the sweet rides, it also makes the big guys in the movie look even bigger, as well as all of the explosions. Given my druthers, I'd say the next one should be in 3D. Also, the chairs should vibrate.
Think: Peanut butter and chocolate.
