In the abridged Green Lantern footage released on the Internet following Wondercon, superhero fanboys got plenty to look at from the upcoming movie: The Parallax entity, the reciting of the Lantern oath, the thousands of aliens who make up the Corps -- and we also got a quick explanation of why Hal Jordan wears a mask while other Lanterns don't, and why it comes and goes. Apparently, it manifests itself when Hal needs to hide his identity, and while we aren't sure an explanation was necessary, the fact that there is a set rule behind it raises some questions. To wit:
How does the ring know that the ringbearer's identity needs protecting?
It appears to manifest on Hal when he awakens on Oa, even though there is nothing there that could threaten his identity, just other Corpsmen. And once Tomar Re introduces himself, it disappears on its own, which seems to indicate that the ring (or Hal) just needed to know who Tomar Re was. But while we know the rings can read the thoughts of the wearer, we also know they can read the thoughts of non-wearers, as they track down new users by remotely sensing their personalities. So in activating the mask, does the ring read the wishes of the ringbearer, or the intentions of the other person? And if it can sense intentions, shouldn't it be able to pre-emptively find criminals?
Why does the Corps allow secret identities?
According to the comics, it's an option for every Corpsman, presumably so they can have a life outside the Corps and protect their loved ones. But given that there are only two Lanterns for every sector of space, should they really be working a second job? Protecting multiple planets and their inhabitants isn't exactly a part-time mission -- does Hal really have the time to work a full day as a test pilot? (Confession: I do not know what hours a test pilot works.) Since a pretty large percentage of Corps members don't have masks, does that mean they don't have families and don't work second jobs, or are their families cool with being targeted by vengeful space pirates and their bosses cool with them moonlighting as intergalactic peacekeepers?
The ring is smart -- so why choose a domino mask?
Seriously, a mask that only covers your eyes is one of the most ridiculous methods of concealing your identity ever invented, right below Superman's glasses-and-spit-curl. Anybody with half a brain who's of your species is going to be able to recognize you from your nose, mouth and hair, so you'd think a super-smart ring computer would whip you up a full face covering, or a helmet or something. Granted, an alien may not be able to pick one human out of a line-up of similar-looking-humans, but considering that most species only have one representative in the Corps, and most operate under their real names, there isn't really going to be any question about which Green Lantern you are when you're flying around in space. "Hey, Bird-Lantern -- you suck!"
