Aliens invade Los Angeles, a wolf menaces Amanda Seyfried and the Jackass crew puts the gross in 3D-enhanced box office gross.
Battle: Los Angeles
Saw District 9? Liked District 9? The makers of Battle: Los Angeles sure did, because their movie feels a lot like that movie, only set in the City of Angels. After aliens drop out of the skies over Los Angeles, a crack military squad (led by Aaron Eckhart) heads into the fray to battle the invaders. Michelle Rodriguez co-stars as -- you guessed it -- a trash-talking spitfire. In other words, she's playing herself again. (Also available via Movies on Demand starting June 28)
Extras: Lots of short making-of docs, a playable demo of the new PS3 game Resistance 3 and picture-in-picture storyboard comparisons.
Red Riding Hood
Twilight and Thirteen director Catherine Hardwicke puts a semi-new twist on the old fairy tale of an overly trusting, fashion-conscious village girl (played here by Amanda Seyfried), her grandmother and the Big Bad Wolf that threatens them both. Let's see, vampires, wolves, out-of-control teen girls -- what frightening mythical creature will Hardwicke tackle next? Hmm, there hasn't been a good Bigfoot movie since Harry and the Hendersons... (Also available via Movies on Demand.)
Extras: An alternate ending and deleted scenes, four featurettes, two music videos and a gag reel. So wait...the gag reel is not the actual movie?
Hall Pass
After years of churning out increasingly mediocre comedies (Stuck on You or The Heartbreak Kid anyone...anyone?) the Farrelly Brothers finally get their mojo back -- somewhat -- with this story of a pair of husbands (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) who are granted a week off from their respective marriages to recapture the glory of their single days. Their antics are pretty funny, but what really elevates the film are Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate's wry, surprisingly emotional performances as the guys' long-suffering wives. If there's a sequel (which is doubtful considering the movie's anemic box office) let's base it around them, please. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)
Extras: Surprisingly light, especially for a comedy -- there's an extended cut of the film that's only seven minutes longer than the theatrical version, a short gag reel and a single deleted scene. Either this was a really serious set or all of the funny stuff actually made it into the finished film for once.
Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie
Hard to believe that the Jackass franchise turned ten years old last year. It's even harder to believe that the third Jackass feature film is the highest-grossing entry in the series, banking over $100 million at the box office. Credit for that has to go to the all-important 3D bump; so Hollywood, forget superheroes in spandex and blue alien cats from another planet -- apparently moviegoers are happy to pay jacked-up prices just to see exploding anuses and flying Porta-Potties in glorious 3D.
Extras: Both the Blu-ray and standard DVD discs (neither of which are in 3D, by the way) offer 30 minutes of additional pratfalls, a documentary about the origins of Jackass and footage from the group's European tour.
Also Out This Week:
Lots of great guilty pleasures on Blu-ray, starting with the Keanu Reeves double bill of Johnny Mnemonic and Point Break the best movie about sky-diving, surfer bank robbers ever made. The '80s cult classic Heavy Metal also makes its long overdue Blu appearance just in time for Father's Day, so kids can give their Gen-X dads a healthy dose of nostalgia. Finally, Marvel continues the ongoing motion comics experiment with the Marvel Knights Double Feature: Iron Man: Extremis and Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D., the latter written and illustrated by dynamic duo Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev.
