Danny McBride teams with David Gordon Green for a future late-night stoner classic and a certain muscle-bound barbarian makes his Blu-ray debut.
Your Highness
You probably had to grow up watching (and re-watching) movies like Krull, The Beastmaster and Excalibur to fully enjoy David Gordon Green's deliberately goofy, pot-infused tribute to the fantasy films of the early '80s. In his first studio-backed vehicle as a leading man, the irascible Danny McBride plays the black sheep of a royal family, whose brave, more handsome sibling (James Franco, vamping hilariously as a Lancelot-like hero) embarks on a quest to rescue his lady love (Zooey Deschanel) from the clutches of an evil wizard (Justin Theroux). Along the way, they make the acquaintance of a warrior woman (Natalie Portman, the one weak link in the otherwise sharp cast) who has her own mission to complete. The whole thing is profoundly dumb, but that's one hundred percent intentional; Your Highness is basically the Cheech and Chong movie that Cheech and Chong never made. Mark my words: in another decade it'll be a late-night stoner classic.
Extras: Deleted scenes and outtakes, a gag reel and a commentary track with Green.
Rio
A mostly harmless children's cartoon that passes the time without ever really developing into something truly memorable, Rio partners Jesse Eisenberg with Anne Hathaway as a pair of rare Brazilian birds that need to mate to save their species. Too bad they spend most of their time bickering. The rest of the overqualified vocal cast includes Tracy Morgan as a slobbery bulldog, George Lopez as an obnoxious toucan and Jamie Foxx and will.i.am as two busybody songbirds. If nothing else, the movie will hold your kids' attention while you stream episodes of Dexter to your laptop.
Extras: Tons of featurettes, a few music videos and exclusive levels of the Angry Birds tie-in game (on the Blu-ray version only).
Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer
With another Conan movie about to hit theaters -- this one starring Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's two outings as the mythic barbarian finally arrive on Blu-ray. (The Austrian Oak technically played the role for a third time in 1985's Red Sojna, but his character was named Kalidor there due to rights issues. Still, everyone pretty much knew that he was supposed to be Conan.) Written and directed by John Milius, Barbarian is definitely the stronger of the pair, providing viewers with Conan's backstory and pitting him against the formidable Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones). Destroyer is a tamer affair that further suffers from stiff, campy performances by Grace Jones and Wilt Chamberlin. Here's hoping that the new Conan is more of a barbarian than a destroyer.
Also on DVD:
The inspirational biopic Soul Surfer tells the story of Bethany Hamilton, a surfer that lost her hand to a hungry shark, but eventually found the will to get back on her board. Co-starring the wooden Carrie Underwood as the surfboard... uh, I mean, Bethany's best friend. The low budget vampire movie Stake Land imagines a post-apocalyptic America overrun by vampires where the lucky few that have survived attempt to seek refuge in Canada. So it's a metaphor for the health care debate, then? The vintage '80s teen comedy Better Off Dead allows John Cusack's fans (and they're still out there) to revisit one of his earliest, funniest films. Finally, the indie drama The Music Never Stopped gives ace character actor J.K. Simmons a meaty dramatic role as a father whose adult son has a brain tumor that keeps his mind trapped in the past.
