Come in, we said, we'll give you shelter from the storm.
Take Shelter
Our pick for the best movie of 2011, Jeff Nichols's sophomore feature stars Michael Shannon (in a performance that was criminally overlooked by the Academy this year) as an ordinary working class husband and father who starts experiencing apocalyptic visions of an impending storm. In order to protect his family, he starts building a storm shelter in the backyard. But is a threat really eminent or is it all in his head? That's the basic hook, but the film goes so much deeper than that, offering a compelling portrait of the challenges of modern life in contemporary America.
Extras: A commentary track with Shannon and Nichols, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a bonus Q&A with Shannon and co-star Shea Wingham.

The Rum Diary
Johnny Depp reprises his role as a Hunter S. Thompson stand-in for The Rum Diary, which is based on the firebrand journalist's semi-autobiographical novel. While not a direct prequel to 1997's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the arc of the movie does strive to show how a young, idealistic journalist morphed into the establishment-challenging rebel that founded gonzo journalism. Depp remains an uncanny doppelgänger for Thompson (though it's creepy that he somehow manages to look younger here than he did over a decade ago in Las Vegas) but the movie's episodic structure and jarring shifts in tone keep it from capturing the author's singular voice.
Extras: Two making-of featurettes.

The Human Centipede 2
This sequel to the 2009 cult sensation is a terrible, terrible movie. But it does feature a very memorable, very spooky lead performance from first-time actor Laurence R. Harvey, playing a morbidly obese, mentally challenged shut-in whose all-time favorite movie is... The Human Centipede. "Fact" and fiction further bleed together (literally) when Harvey's unnamed psycho goes about trying to recreate the movie-within-the-movie's human centipede chain. Director Tom Six ups the gore quotient considerably, but forgets to make room for anything in the way of genuine tension or horror. The scariest thing in the movie are the close-ups of Harvey's face, gazing soullessly out at the audience.
Extras: An interview with Six, as well as a commentary track anchored by the filmmaker and his star, additional deleted scenes and a tour of the set.

Also on DVD:
Originally filmed in 2009, the rom com The Rebound, which stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as an older divorcee who acquires a young admirer (Justin Bartha), finally reaches audiences via a direct-to-DVD release. Universal continues their 100th anniversary celebration with an extras-laden, Blu-ray release of the 1930 Best Picture winner All Quiet on the Western Front. Not to be confused with Felicia Day's web series The Guild, which spoofs online role playing games, Dragon Age: Redemption, is a straightforward spin-off of the popular video game series. Finally, before the feature length version of Dr. Seuss's environmental parable drops, check out the old television version via The Lorax: Deluxe Edition, which also includes animated versions of The Butter Battle Book and Pontoffel Pock & His Magical Piano. (Yeah, we don't remember that last one either.)
