Robert Downey Jr. is Hitting the Pipe

The meerschaum pipe, that is. As in, that's the kind of pipe Sherlock Holmes smokes, and Robert Downey, Jr. is going to play Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's upcoming movie about the fictional English detective. ...Was that too obscure a reference to make in the pursuit of a cleverly suggestive and potentially scandalous headline? Maybe, but I have no regrets.

Robert Downey, Jr. Perfects the Art of the Underdog

Robert Downey, Jr. Perfects the Art of the Underdog You may have heard about this guy named Robert Downey Jr., who is only, like, the hottest thing in Hollywood right now thanks to the runaway success of Iron Man. Apparently, it's been a busy seven weeks for Downey since Iron Man premiered. After all, every studio you've ever heard of has been courting the guy. It's the kind of troubled-dude-makes-good story that Hollywood eats up. Especially because he's doing such a good job playing the nice guy these days.

Indie Snapshot: Someone Marry Barry

Indie Snapshot: Someone Marry Barry

The new comedy (and I'm using the word "comedy" very loosely here) Someone Marry Barry is one of those movies destined to be buried in the depths of Netflix Instant -- one of those movies that you ponder out loud, "What the hell is this?", notice its dismal one-star rating, and if you're feeling especially bored (or desperate) actually dare to watch. And then you'll know, within the first two minutes, why this is a bottom-of-the-barrel, grotesque and unfathomably stupid movie no one paid any attention to.

Indie Snapshot: Short Term 12

It's rare that a film can leave such an indelible mark on your spirit that it not only reaffirms your faith in why we go to the movies, but in the human race itself. It's even rarer that that very same magic can happen the second time around, if not more so. When I first saw Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12 at the SXSW Festival back in March, it was far and away the best movie I'd seen at the festival. Seeing it again five months later, it's the best film I've seen so far this year.

Just in time for summer, here's a healthy dose of Meatballs.

The Avengers: The Gang’s All Here

The Avengers: The Gang’s All Here

It's not hard to understand why people are so excited for The Avengers. For starters, its release signals the start of the annual summer blockbuster season, when audiences can look forward to four solid months of effects-heavy escapist entertainment. Secondly, for the millions of moviegoers who have followed the individual Marvel heroes through their own big-screen adventures (not to mention their own comic-book titles), the thought of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk sharing the same frame and battling the same common enemy (as well as each other) is pretty remarkable. And lastly, there's the fact that the Avengers are assembling under the watchful eye of writer/director Joss Whedon, at last making his leap from cult artist to mainstream moviemaker. While Whedon's name might not mean anything to a good 50-60 percent of the audience that'll show up opening weekend, there will be a significant segment of moviegoers more thrilled about seeing his name in the credits than any of the actors'. With all these various elements coming together, who can blame those viewers who are heading into the theater expecting to see the comic book movie to end all comic book movies?

Five Thoughts About The Avengers Trailer

Five Thoughts About The Avengers Trailer

They're heeeeere! Joss Whedon's all-star adventure The Avengers is still seven months away from hitting theaters, but Disney is wasting little time getting footage out there to the superhero-starved masses. After a new batch of photos hit the interwebs last week, here comes the movie's first official trailer, which offers a far more substantial peek at the movie's scale and set-pieces than that short teaser at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger did. Here's our instant reaction to a trailer we're sure we'll be watching over and over again in the run-up to the movie's May 4, 2012 release.
