Margaret: The Only Living Girl in New York

Margaret: The Only Living Girl in New York

After a nearly six-year stint in the editing room, Kenneth Lonergan's long-delayed sophomore feature Margaret finally arrives in theaters still feeling somewhat unfinished. The version of the film that opens in (extremely) limited release today is rife with jarring tonal shifts, clunky dialogue, overly mannered performances and least a half-dozen subplots that lead nowhere. And yet despite -- or maybe, because of -- the movie's free-form messiness, it possesses a vitality that more carefully manicured studio movies, even one like last week's exceptionally well-crafted Moneyball, sometimes lack. Margaret is a movie that demands the viewer's attention and engagement throughout its sprawling two-and-a-half hour runtime, as Lonergan spins his tale without directing us as to how we should react to or feel about what's unfolding onscreen. It's only in the film's moving, but perhaps too-literal, final scene that his intentions become clear. Margaret is a music-less opera, complete with screaming matches that resemble arias and plenty of heightened emotion and melodrama played against the beautiful backdrop that is New York City.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is Only Half There, but It’s the Good Half

After two years of waiting, I have finally seen the latest installment in the Harry Potter series, and it is good. I mean, really good. I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat. And considering that it was only rated PG, rather than PG-13 like the last two, there was still plenty of gore and violence and scary stuff. There's also a lot of snogging (British for making out), because, in case you weren't aware, this chapter of the Potter saga is all about sex.

Half-Blood? More Like Bloody Brilliant!

Half-Blood? More Like Bloody Brilliant!

Dear God -
Thank you so much. I know you don't go in for the whole magic thing, it being in direct contradiction to your laws and all, but I just want to say how swell it is of you not to smite anybody involved with making the Harry Potter movies. (Well, except Richard Harris, but he had it coming.) Because I just saw the new Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince teaser trailer, and it is the most beautiful thing I have seen in several days -- which reminds me, I never thanked you for The Dark Knight! You rock!

Trailer Previews: Death Kisses, Dark Knight and Keanu Barada Nikto A handful of trailers and other filmic appetizers have come out for the holiday weekend, hoping to grab their share of movie-goers' attention some time between the third round of hotdogs and passing out on the sofa. You could hoist yourself up and head out to see a new release in the theater, during which you might see some of these new trailers, but sit back and relax. I've got them right here, within easy reach of your antacids and favorite pillow.

Meat Train Not Stopping at a Station Near You

Meat Train Not Stopping at a Station Near You Unless you happen to be near one of the handful of theaters that will run Midnight Meat Train come August 1, you'll have to wait till it's out on DVD. Which, according to ShockTillYouDrop won't actually be that long a wait, as they speculate the release will come as early as October. (Just in time to scare the pants off snot-nosed trick-or-treaters!) According to the report, Lionsgate is only "planning a limited 100 theater run" which, frankly, is a number some wouldn't even wish on Uwe Boll. The paltry release fulfills a "contractual obligation" Lionsgate has "to give it some sort of theatrical run." Otherwise, it would have gone straight to DVD like any number of Mary-Kate and Ashley's pre-teen movies.

American Film Institute Has Bad Taste In Movies

by Kasey McDonald June 12, 2008 4:15 pm
American Film Institute Has Bad Taste In Movies It was announced that next week CBS will be running a special on the American Film Institute's top 10 movies of 10 different genres. They haven't yet revealed what movies made the cut (you'll have to tune in to see, apparently), but their website does have a list of the 500 nominees.

I've sifted through them (so you don't have to!) and was surprised by more than a few of the noms, particularly since some of the criteria jurors were asked to consider are "Critical Recognition," "Cultural Impact" and "Major Award Winner." All that and they have to be American productions! When the one hundred picks come out on the 17th, we'll see what they give us, but in the meantime, I've gone through the nominees and called out a few that had me doing a double take. These were up for the best of the best!?
