Snow White and the Huntsman: The Fairest of Them All

Every summer there's that wild card big-budget studio picture that catches you off guard by being better than you could have predicted. Last year, that film was the Hail Mary franchise reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which made up for the terrible performances of its human cast with a compelling simian hero (Andy Serkis's Caesar) and some entertaining ape-driven action sequences. And while 2012's summer movie season is just getting started, Snow White and the Huntsman is the current favorite to be its most unexpected surprise. That's not to say it's perfect, by the way; first-time director Rupert Sanders and screenwriters Evan Draugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini make a number of major and minor mistakes in the process of bringing the age-old fairy tale back to the big screen. But the movie ultimately gets more right than wrong, finding the proper balance between spectacle and storytelling -- a trick that certain other recent blockbusters (looking at you Men in Black 3 and Battleship) failed to achieve.

Young Adult: Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody Discuss Their Post-Juno Reunion

After Juno catapulted them to the Hollywood A-list four years ago, director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody team up again for Young Adult, a pitch-black comedy about young adult novelist Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) , who deals with a sudden case of mid-life crisis by retreating to her tiny Minnesotan hometown. There, she tracks down her former flame (Patrick Wilson) and dedicates herself to stealing him back from his wife and young daughter. She also befriends her high school's resident outcast Matt (Patton Oswalt), the only person brave -- or foolhardy -- enough to call her on her B.S. The team behind Young Adult, which opens in limited release on Friday, passed through New York recently and spoke with the press about YA fiction and the resurgence of bad girls post-Bridesmaids.

Convention or Film Festival? You Decide! Later this month, movie stars and producers will descend upon Colorado. Hollywood's A-listers will rub shoulders with the industry elite, hobnob with the wealthy, attend exclusive parties, promote their causes, and get a sneak peek at a slate of movies. Is it the highly regarded Telluride Film Festival they're all turning out for? Not this time around. According to The Hollywood Reporter, what's got actors and producers all frothing with an excitement usually reserved for prestigious film festivals and awards ceremonies is, instead, the Democratic National Convention.
