Decoding The Ides of March: Who’s Who in George Clooney’s Political Drama

The new political drama The Ides of March, directed, co-written and starring George Clooney, is technically based on Beau Willimon's 2008 play, Farragut North, but you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's more of a ripped-from-the-headlines roman à clef. Almost everything about this moderately involving, but ultimately underwhelming film -- from the characters to the central story arc (which follows a presidential aspirant whose campaign is almost derailed by a sex scandal) -- seems to be modeled after real-life situations and individuals. That feeling is further driven home by the occasional appearance of recognizable figures like Charlie Rose and Rachel Maddow playing themselves in small cameos.

Which Clooney is Better: The Actor or the Director?

Which Clooney is Better: The Actor or the Director?

In the next two months, George Clooney will release his fourth movie as a director (The Ides of March, out in theaters this Friday) and twenty-sixth as a featured actor (The Descendants, set for release on November 18). That got us thinking about which version of Clooney we've been most impressed with in recent years, the one in front of the camera or the one behind it. Here's the way George Clooney, Actor and George Clooney, Director match up against each other in five key areas.

The Descendants: Blue Hawaii

The Descendants: Blue Hawaii

Writer/director Alexander Payne, the darkly comic mind behind Election and Sideway, returns after a seven-year hiatus with The Descendants, which easily ranks as his most heartwarming feature to date. It's also his least provocative and prickly, but hey, we all get a little sentimental in our old age. And because this is the guy who made Election after all, his version of "sentimental" isn't the usual gooey Hollywood treacle like The Bucket List or The Help. The Descendants still has a certain bite to it, dwelling, as it does, on the characters' all-too-human foibles and frailties. It's the kind of movie where no one is beyond reproach... even the woman that's lying in the hospital in a coma from which she'll never wake up.

Strike update: Nothing's happened!

Strike update: Nothing's happened! It's been easy to forget that a possible Screen Actors Guild strike is looming over Hollywood like a cloud of L.A. smog. We haven't even talked about it in almost a month. But just because no one is paying attention doesn't mean it's gone away. Quite the contrary in fact.

The latest development (really more of a non-development) was on Saturday, when the SAG board backed its negotiators' efforts to gain more control (and money) from web content that features SAG actors.

Who, us? Strike?

Who, us? Strike? It's June 30th, and we all know what that means: The deadline for a deal between the Screen Actors Guild and studio owners is at midnight, so a strike is imminent, right?
