It's never exactly a shock when a kids movie (which are known to be big box office draws) and the weekend's widest release is the top movie at the box office, so there were no big surprises this weekend: Kung Fu Panda chop-sockied the competition with $60 million on 4,114 screens to top the weekend box office. [That's no dim sum! Get it? No? Sigh. - Z]
The mess that is Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess With the Zohan overcame reviews to beat Carrie Bradshaw and Indiana Jones for the No. 2 spot. Zohan brought in $40 million on 3,462 screens. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull jumped back in front of last week's top movie, Sex and the City, for third place, adding $22.8 million to its haul, which is at $253 million after three weeks in theaters. Sex came in fourth with another $21.3 million, putting it right on the verge of breaking $100 million after just two weeks.
The rest of the top 10 were so far back they weren't even contenders (Take note: Two movies in the top 10 made less than $1 million for the week, not a good sign for summer moviegoing):
5. The Strangers, $9.3 million
6. Iron Man, $7.5 million
7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $5.5 million
8. What Happens in Vegas, $3.4 million
9. Baby Mama, $779,000
10. Made of Honor, $775,000
