America loves The Office, which I have to imagine means that a significant portion of America loves Rainn Wilson, who plays the lovably obnoxious Dwight. So I always wondered why we didn't see more Office cross-promotion for The Rocker, in which Wilson plays a washed-up drummer named Fish, who missed his shot at fame and now plays in his nephew's garage band. Was the studio ashamed of the film, for some reason? Well, I just got my copy of the DVD, and I think I know what the problem is. The movie borrows liberally from one of the greatest rock band movies of all time, one that changed the world with its mind-blowing take on the music industry and the price of fame. That's right, I'm talking about Josie and the Pussycats. With so many similarities to one of the finest rock films of all time, it's no wonder they kept this movie on the DL. Don't see it? Let me break it down for you...
The recently released Pineapple Express DVD is all it's cracked up to be and more, folks. It's funny, packed with goodies, and so very educational. Here, we share the knowledge, with five things the DVD taught us (we're talking about the two-disc set or the Blu-ray, by the way; you won't learn nearly as much from the cheap, lame edition).
American Teen was a movie that did really well at Sundance and had a lot of buzz this summer, but I purposefully didn't see it in theaters because a) I hate coming-of-age stories (even unscripted ones) for some reason that I've never been able to figure out, and b) I also hate teenagers as a general rule and was afraid I'd be trapped in a movie world with them and die of being annoyed (it can happen). So I didn't see it until last night, and while I ended up far less annoyed than I expected to be, my main reaction was just kind of, wow, that was the fanciest True Life episode I've ever seen sort of!
It's difficult to sum up the oddball brilliance and hilarity of Hamlet 2. In a nutshell, it's the underdog tail of consummate loser Dana Marschz, a failed actor whose crippling daddy issues are at the root of his myriad problems. He's got a soul-crushing job as a high school drama teacher to a gaggle of aggressively indifferent hoods (and two conspicuously perky theater geeks), a floundering marriage to a bitch-on-wheels wife, played with cutting genius by Catherine Keener (who I'm beginning to worry is being type-cast as a castrating wench), and an unflagging desire to prove his relevance while simultaneously acknowledging that he's really really crappy at his chosen craft. All this while wearing an undercarriage-revealing caftan. It's a brave new world for Movies Without Pity!
In an effort to make the various MWOP blogs as easy-to-keep-track-of as possible, "DVDS Unwrapped" and "Reviews of Movies We Haven't Seen" are both being folded into the Moviefile, making it your one-stop-shopping destination for all things motion-picturesque! New postings will be filed under those category names, so you can find what you're looking for, but all of the older DVD reviews and unseen movie reviews will be archived in their old blogs. So if you ever want to look up that old DVD review of The Dark Knight, or our pre-emptive review of Beverly Hills Chihuahua, here's where to go:
