So the new movie The Box kicks off with the premise that a cash-strapped couple can get a million bucks... so long as they are willing to sacrifice a total stranger. Not a bad idea, but what if they asked some really important questions... you know, about TV and movies and things that really matter in the world. We put together a list of pop culture queries to test what you'd be willing to endure for a new Star Wars film, a Firefly reunion or all the answers to Lost. See our list here, then let us know what you would do.
Editor's Note: The Heath Ledger question in this feature originally referenced the actor's untimely passing in a manner that many readers interpreted as offensive, which is reflected in some of the comments below. In response, the question has since been changed to offend only Joel Schumacher.
Anthony Hopkins. Robert De Niro. Kathy Bates. Vincent D'Onofrio. Billy Zane. What do these people have in common? They all freak us the hell out. Not on a day-to-day basis, of course, but each has had at least one truly memorable role in a horror film. These singularly terrifying performances have earned them all spots on our list of the Scariest Horror Movie Villains of All Time, alongside such luminaries as Freddy Krueger and Leatherface. Check out our list, then let us know who we've left off below!
How do we know that Couples Retreat is going to be good? Two words. Actually, four words. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. Okay, that was five words. But still, those two are hilarious by themselves, and they're even more funny when they're together. Yes, Jason Bateman and Faizon Love and Kristen Bell and Jean Reno are all funny, too, but those two are like comedy peanut butter and hilarity jelly. Of course, if it was just one of them in the movie, we wouldn't be so excited, because while the two of them are great together, when left to their own devices they tend to make bad decisions. Also, their personality types balance each other out. Who wants a sandwich that's just jelly? Or just peanut butter. Nobody, that's who. Well, sometimes you do, but it's rare. Check out our guide to their best team-ups and worst solo projects, with a few good solitary ones sprinkled in. And let us know if we're off-base below.
As you know by now, Zombieland is great. We loved it, America loved it, all the other critical types in the land loved it -- it is officially the best. Trust us, we've done plenty of science and research on this fact. But you know what else is the best? These other horror comedies that came before it. The best ones ever even, we'd wager. Zombieland is great, but it's not like they invented the wheel here. Look at the list. You'll see.
Surrogates: The Fake Bruce Willises We Know and Love
In Bruce Willis' new film, he plays a cop who has a robotic duplicate. But looking at the duplicate's goofy hair and stony expression, we have to wonder -- haven't we seen this robot before? Willis has gone through a lot of different looks and personalities in his movies, which makes us wonder how many of them were the real Bruce and how many were simply surrogates. Check out our handy guide to the many acting robots of Bruce Willis, and see exactly which model you've been cheering on all these years.
Fall Movie Previews Without Pity are Live!
Looking to find out what the big movie releases of the fall are? Well, barring any unfortunate incidents like last year's surprise postponement of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, MWoP has put together the essential guide to the final season of 2009, broken down into five convenient categories: Comedies and Dramedies, Serious Dramas, Chills and Thrills, Animation and Sci-Fi, Action and Adventure. There's a bit of cross-pollination in there, but all of the big releases this season are covered in one of those galleries, as well as some little gems we can't wait to see. Sure, there are a lot of Oscar-bait movies and horror flicks, as is the season's wont, but there are also a lot of big spectacles and even a few potential blockbusters, so start planning your calendar appropriately!
Man we love Amy Adams. Is there nothing she can't do? No role she can't play? Enchanted princess, reserved nun, Amelia Earhart? It sure doesn't seem like it. We bet she could have even played chef Julia Child in Julie and Julia, but the casting of Meryl Streep is just too perfect. And we're just as happy to see Adams as Julie, the modern-day woman who tries to cook her way through the entire Julia Child cookbook. To see the other movies that Adams has made better through her presence, check out our highly scientific Guide to Amy Adams Being Awesome.
Apparently, Funny People wants to be all things to all people. In a trend hinted at in 40-Year-Old Virgin and attempted in Knocked Up, Judd Apatow seems to want Funny People to be a raunchy comedy and a touching romantic drama about second chances. We have no idea if he can pull that off (Knocked Up doesn't give us much hope), but you have to give him credit for trying, especially since he's assembled one of the pound-for-pound funniest casts we've seen in a while. Of course, for every funny movie one of these stars has been in, there's been a dud, so there are no guarantees. We ran down the cast's capacity for funny in our Funny People Risk Assessor gallery, so check it out before you decide whether to roll the dice on your comedy.
If anybody is planning on nominating Katherine Heigl for an award for her work in this new, fairly formulaic-looking rom-com, don't. She's just going to turn it down, because if she didn't think her Grey's Anatomy work was worthy of an Emmy nomination, then she can't possibly believe this familiar-sounding drivel is worthy of an Oscar, or a Golden Globe, or even a Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Award. Or maybe she does -- we've found a set diary that seems to be hers, and in it she gushes about the cleverness of the film and the creatives behind it. Still, we don't think she'll receive any nominations for the part, unless you count the Razzie, and we don't think you can turn those down anyway. Check out her secret Ugly Truth set diary here!
Can you believe it's been two years since the last Harry Potter film came out? ...You can? Yeah, it does feel like a long time, doesn't it. Well, it's time to refresh your memory about what happened last time, and who everybody is, so you can go into the new film and know what the hell's going on. Because there are a lot of characters in these films. Between the students and the teachers and the parents and the Death-Eaters, nobody gets more than five minutes of screentime, and it's hard to keep their stories straight. Luckily, we've created a handy-dandy Harry Potter Character Guide with pictures of all of the old characters and a few new ones, plus info on what happened last time and what their status is at the start of this one. It's non-spoilery, so don't worry about us giving away the extremely shocking ending of the movie which everyone already knows about anyway. Still, if you don't want to know how it ends, you should probably leave the Internet.
