As we get closer to the fall television season, studios pick up the pace in releasing their previous season's TV shows on DVD -- even the canceled ones! Still, a couple of gory flicks managed to sneak into stores amidst all of the TV offerings, as well as a teen girl musical, an old man comedy and a retro sci-fi actioner celebrating its 25th birthday. Happy birthday!

Looking to find out what the big movie releases of the fall are? Well, barring any unfortunate incidents like last year's surprise postponement of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, MWoP has put together the essential guide to the final season of 2009, broken down into five convenient categories: Comedies and Dramedies, Serious Dramas, Chills and Thrills, Animation and Sci-Fi, Action and Adventure. There's a bit of cross-pollination in there, but all of the big releases this season are covered in one of those galleries, as well as some little gems we can't wait to see. Sure, there are a lot of Oscar-bait movies and horror flicks, as is the season's wont, but there are also a lot of big spectacles and even a few potential blockbusters, so start planning your calendar appropriately!

The world lost a great filmmaker this week, as legendary screenwriter and director John Hughes passed away. Not only did the man write and direct many of the 1980s' greatest, funniest films -- Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- he wrote the screenplays for dozens more, including Pretty in Pink, Home Alone and the first three Vacation movies. We went through his body of work to pull out some of the funniest lines that we still quote to this day.

Man we love Amy Adams. Is there nothing she can't do? No role she can't play? Enchanted princess, reserved nun, Amelia Earhart? It sure doesn't seem like it. We bet she could have even played chef Julia Child in Julie and Julia, but the casting of Meryl Streep is just too perfect. And we're just as happy to see Adams as Julie, the modern-day woman who tries to cook her way through the entire Julia Child cookbook. If anybody is planning on nominating Katherine Heigl for an award for her work in this new, fairly formulaic-looking rom-com, don't. She's just going to turn it down, because if she didn't think her Grey's Anatomy work was worthy of an Emmy nomination, then she can't possibly believe this familiar-sounding drivel is worthy of an Oscar, or a Golden Globe, or even a Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Award. Or maybe she does -- we've found a set diary that seems to be hers, and in it she gushes about the cleverness of the film and the creatives behind it. Still, we don't think she'll receive any nominations for the part, unless you count the Razzie, and we don't think you can turn those down anyway. Check out her secret Ugly Truth set diary here!

The trailer for I Love You Beth Cooper may make it look like your standard teen comedy, but there's just something about it that I can't put my finger on. Sure, it follows the same "beauty and the geek" pattern of films like Can't Hardly Wait, but the premise, the sets, the characters... something about it just screams "1980s" to me. I'm getting a little bit of Who's That Girl?, but I'm mostly getting a lot of Weird Science, which is, well, weird, because the film does not appear to involve two teenagers creating the perfect woman using their computer. (Although, if two nerds were to build their ideal woman today, she would probably look a lot less like Kelly LeBrock and a lot more like Hayden Panettiere, if not exactly like her.)

Here at TWoP, cheesy romantic comedies are like our Kryptonite. We can take high-school musicals, twee indie dramedies and mindless mega-octane actioners, but have someone do a pratfall into a wedding cake or wind up accidentally naked in front of someone's grandma, and we get the dry heaves. So we're torn over The Proposal, which on the one hand looks like Green Card Redux, and on the other hand... looks kind of awesome. While you Green Card fans may be right there with us, the rest of you may wonder if we've lost our senses. But here's five reasons we're actually thinking about putting on some sunglasses and a trenchcoat and sneaking into this movie.

Mother's Day is this weekend. For some of you, it's that time of year you get reminded of how infrequently they call the woman who begat you, told endlessly about how you should get your hair cut differently, and debriefed about how so-and-so's children have gotten just tons of promotions lately. For others, the day's a pleasant reminder of the woman who chewed out your first bosses for firing you, helped you egg the bratty neighbor kid's house, and stood up for you in the principal's office after that unfortunate... misunderstanding... with the firecrackers in the girl's washroom. Moms can be a tough bunch, for better or for worse. Here are ten movie moms who may span the spectrum from saint to she-devil, but they all have one thing in common: you don't want to mess with any of them.

Summer is almost here! You may disagree with us, saying June is still over a month a away, but Hollywood would disagree with you. The summer movie season starts May 1, with the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it doesn't let up until August! Because we know it's so hard to keep track of what's coming out when, we've begun creating our hand-dandy photo guides to the big releases, starting with one guide for Action and Drama movies, and one for the Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror genres. It's almost here. Because you all were begging for it. The return of Renee Zellwegger in yet another sequel to 2001's Bridget Jones' Diary. Apparently, they're going to base the third installment on a series of columns author Helen Fielding wrote about Bridget trying to have a child in her 40s, and production will start later this year. Unfortunately, we're kind of over Ms. Jones at this point, after her last wacky and unnecessary adventure brought her antics to the edge of reasonableness. Sure, it'll probably make money, but it seems like that's really the only reason they're making it. (Well, that and actually giving Zellwegger something to do.) And it's not the first sequel that should never have existed. We won't go so far as to say that all sequels are a bad idea, but a good number of them are, and many of them involve Vin Diesel somehow. These are ten that we actively resent the existence of.
