Sandler Takes A Shortcut to Horror-ville

Sandler Takes A Shortcut to Horror-ville Seems like lately you can't swing a cat without hitting a new horror movie. (Watch, now someone will make a horror movie where the villain's weapon of choice is a cat he swings around like a lasso. Screw knives and chainsaws. Have you ever been on the wrong end of a pissed-off Siamese?) An editor once told me, "The worse the economy is, the more people flock to horror stories." Maybe it takes their minds off their problems, or helps to put things in perspective. Sure, variable interest rates suck, but at least they don't hack you into bits and wear your face like a Halloween mask. Adam Sandler seems to agree: He's just launched a new label called Scary Madison to produce genre projects, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Scary Madison's first project, titled Shortcut, is being called a "thriller," but synopsis describes two brothers coming across a "rarely used shortcut" and discovering why it's rarely used. It's probably safe to say it's something you'd find in the general "hack you to bits" category. Has there ever been a shortcut-gone-wrong story that wasn't horrific? As suggested by its name, the new venture is a branch of Sandler's Happy Madison production shingle, known for churning out comedies. If you're wondering whether Sandler is capable of scaring you, look no further than the short shorts he sports in You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Maybe that's what those brothers find lurking in the back roads.

Sandler won't be straying too far from the beaten path, though: Scary Madison will be looking to its happier sibling for talent. Shortcut will be directed by Nicholaus Goossen, who helmed Grandma's Boy for Happy Madison in 2006.
