The Dark Knight DVD is no Joke

Now that The Dark Knight has dropped out of the Top Ten at the box office (after 11 weeks!), it's probably on its way out of the theaters -- not counting, of course, Warner Brothers' plans to re-release it during Oscar season next year. But for those who just want to be able to play it on a constant loop in their homes, the DVD and Blu-Ray will both be out on December 9th, just in time for you to buy it for yourself for Christmas, thereby putting to rest the annual question of what you'll get yourself instead of buying something for your Aunt Selma.

You can see artwork of the DVD cases here, if that sort of thing matters to you, but for a quick rundown, all you need to know is that there will be a single-disc DVD version with full-screen and widescreen versions of the film. The two-disc special edition has a few extras, including a documentary ("Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene"), the full-frame IMAX scenes, six "Gotham Tonight" news programs, galleries of poster art and production stills and a digital copy of the film. (I wonder if it will have all of the poster art. Weren't there, like, 50 posters?)

The 2-disc Blu-ray version has all those special features plus two featurettes ("Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools" and "Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight"), additional galleries of props and concept art, trailers, TV spots and BD-Live enhancement. (Ask your doctor if BD-Live enhancement is right for you. If you experience an erection lasting longer than two hours, you may simply be watching The Dark Knight.)

Of course, if you're hardcore -- and if you have a Blu-ray player, you might be hardcore -- you'll want to get the special edition Blu-Ray set, which comes with a scale model of the Bat-Pod. Hell, you may want to buy it even if you don't have a Blu-ray player. We'll all be watching movies in our heads in five years, anyway.
