I Want My DVD: Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Things Thornton Mellon taught me: It you want to look thin, hang out with fat people. Things Bruce Willis taught me: If you want to look young, hang out with old(er) people.

Red (Special Edition)
This comic-based action-comedy with an all-geriatric cast is also available on Blu-ray, but I would have thought that they would have the technology to put out a limited-edition Red-ray just for this title. (Ditto a Purple-ray release for The Color Purple.) Regardless, both DVD and Blu-ray have deleted and extended scenes, six behind-the-scenes features and an interview with a real retired CIA agent. Yes, I'm sure this movie is remarkably accurate to real life. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Secretariat (2-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
Not the tale of James Spader's dominant/submissive relationship with his horse (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), but rather the tale of the famous racehorse who famously ran fast and became famous. This release includes a bunch of extras, but most of them -- a conversation with the real Penny Chenery, audio commentary and seven deleted scenes -- are on the Blu-ray. The DVD only has three of those scenes and an AJ Michalka music video. Time to upgrade, son!

Saw 3D (2-Disc Blu-ray 3-D/Blu-ray/DVD combo)
The movie is also available in a non-3-D version, but then it's just known as Saw: The Final Chapter, and it doesn't spell out "SAWED" in that clever way that Saw 3D does. And since that's the only clever thing it's got going for it, you're kind of screwed. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
Spoiler alert! (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Nowhere Boy
Aaron Johnson plays a kick-ass young musician named John Lennon, who overcomes a traumatic childhood to bring together the greatest rock-and-roll band in history by the sheer force of his charisma.

Enter the Void
This experimental film follows a Tokyo drug dealer's drug usage, death and out-of-body experience as his spirit explores his past and present -- all shown from his point of view. It's been on a ton of critics' Best of 2010 lists, and I hear they're turning it into a ride at Islands of Adventure.

Red Hill
True Blood's Ryan Kwanten plays a city cop transferred to a rural Australian precinct on the night that an escaped convict comes back to town for revenge on the entire police force. If this were True Blood, he'd probably have sex with everyone first.

House of Bones
Charisma Carpenter. Corin Nemec. Sounds like a Syfy Saturday night to me.

Also Out This Week: Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, Broadcast News (Criterion Collection), The Double Life of Veronique (Criterion Collection, Blu-ray), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Blu-ray), Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Which Way Home, Inhale, Like Dandelion Dust, Feed the Fish, Back to You and Me, Dead Space: Aftermath, Santa Sangre and Open Season 3.
