I Want My DVD: Tuesday, April 19, 2011

This week is filled with sad DVDs. Some because of their subject matter, and others because of the awards they stole from more deserving movies.

The King's Speech
The Academy's Best Picture of 2010, this is one of those movies that somehow through all of its simple elements turns into something everyone loves. The acting is top-notch, the sets and costumes are beautiful, and the story of these men forming a deep friendship is one of those near-universal stories. You could buy this DVD now, but you might want to wait, since this movie is so good that by this time next year it'll probably have its own Criterion Edition.

Gulliver's Travels
I didn't realize there was actually a movie of this. I thought all those commercials were just some strange, hip meta-film project that Jack Black was in. I kind of still hold to this theory, considering Amanda Peet has top billing for this movie according to Amazon.

Somewhere
Without the charm of Bill Murray, this sleepy look at celebrity and every other theme Sofia Coppola likes to explore didn't make a huge splash, but if you like the look and feel of every other movie she has made, this one will appeal to you as well.

Rabbit Hole
God, this movie is almost depressing. As much as everyone who watches this movie wants to be sad, they just can't.

Also out this week: Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story, Born to Raise Hell, To Paris With Love, and Upstairs and Downstairs.

New to Blu-ray: Bambi, Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, Zombie Holocaust, Kes (Criterion) and Sweetie (Criterion).
