People Like Us: Sister? I Hardly Know Her!

People Like Us has the perfect formula for a terrible movie: Emotionally manipulative plot (a man has to deliver $150,000 of his dead father's money to his sister who he's never met), actors who have recently starred in extremely bad films (that's Chris Pine, Michelle Pfeiffer and Elizabeth Banks), a child actor with a hefty role (Michael Hall D'Addario) and a first-time feature film director (Alex Kutzman, who's better known as a writer and producer for TV shows like Fringe, Hawaii Five-0 and Alias, as well as films like Transformers and Star Trek). The movie even begins with a particularly painful wheeling-and-dealing scene between Pine's character Sam and special guest Jon Favreau, playing a character simply known as "Richards." I won't blame you if you leave the theater after the first ten minutes of the movie and demand a refund, but if you choose to stick around through 'til the end, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise.

Wanderlust: Wet Hot American Hippies

David Wain's Wanderlust is neither the most original nor compelling movie ever made, let alone of the year so far. It is, however, laugh-out-loud funny (and not just in a raunchy way) and probably the only film in 2012 that will reference the Nintendo Power Glove. Starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston as a New York City couple who find themselves living on a rural commune, Wanderlust's concept is about as complicated and creative as Role Models, Wain's 2008 movie that I personally found to be surprisingly hilarious. These days, I've been such a fan of Childrens Hospital that my expectations for Wanderlust were fairly high -- even factoring in that the movie had been postponed from its fall release date to February, which is typically regarded as the time of year that studios stick... let's just say their "less than Oscar-worthy" movies -- and I was still impressed with it. While the film is in no way perfect, several major components make it into a success:

Just How Sorkin-y Is The Social Network's Mark Zuckerberg?

As an unabashed Aaron Sorkin apologist, watching The Social Network was particularly enjoyable, not just because it's a mesmerizing and endlessly entertaining movie, but because the thing oozed Sorkin's influence, from its dialogue to its characterizations to its poultry sight gags. But just how much of a Sorkin amalgamation is the movie's depiction of Mark Zuckerberg? I've drawn some comparisons to Sorkin's previous characters to shed some light on the issue. Hey, beats beating the racist, sexist, fact-checking dead horse the Internet's been flogging all week, right?

Resident Evil Afterlife: Who's Slumming, Who's Not?

This weekend, we get a new Resident Evil film -- Resident Evil: Afterlife -- this time using the new-fangled 3D camera contraptions from Avatar. Wow! What a waste of those innovative contraptions! Kidding aside, while the RE films are good, gory fun and all, they are a little embarrassing to be associated with. Here's our tough-love look at the new movie's cast and an evaluation of their decision to appear in it.

Eat Pray Love: More Julia Roberts Movies in Three Words

Eat Pray Love may be an excruciating-looking movie (I have to see it tonight; please feel sorry for me), but what I do like about it is its concise yet descriptive three-word title. More movies should employ this. Specifically, more Julia Roberts movies should employ this, so I've gone back through her most famous films and renamed them with three short phrases that really reflect the movies' most vital components.

The Crazy on the Outside Cast's Second Worst Career Moves For whatever reason, someone has allowed Tim Allen to direct and star in a film called Crazy on the Outside, populated with (mostly) otherwise very fine actors he's clearly called in favors from. The movie's not being released widely, and there haven't been any test screenings (shocking!), so we don't know for absolute sure that it's the worst movie all these actors have ever been in, but the fact that it was directed by Tim Allen, written by the writing duo behind According to Jim, has this poster, and this trailer supposedly filled with its best moments makes us fairly confident that it is. So while we're just sitting here talking trash anyway, let's run down the cast's second-worst film credits, just for the hell of it!
