I've never really watched an entire episode of Ice Road Truckers, mostly because I already get a close enough look at big rigs moving at unsafe speeds every winter when I get on the New York and New Jersey highways. But apparently it's a popular show, so popular that they're making a feature film out of it. While Hollywood has had a long love affair with truckers (Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy, Black Dog, Over the Top, Big Trouble in Little China), the "truckers vs. the elements" angle has never really been explored. But who could play this rare breed of thrill-seeking, steady-handed daredevils? Since they change up the show's roster every season, we simply picked out some of the actors we think would make great truck drivers. No judgment, just a feeling.
John C. Reilly
Although he certainly hasn't worn one in most of his movies, there's something about Reilly that makes us feel like he's wearing a trucker cap even when he's not. Maybe it's the down-home folksiness?
As long as he doesn't fall asleep at the wheel like he did in Crazy Heart or drop a joint in his lap and hit a Dumpster like he did in Lebowski, we can see Bridges keeping his focus on the long haul, with a cowboy hat on his head the whole time.
We need an older, heavyset guy in the group, possibly with a chinstrap beard, so we say get the man, the myth, the legend off of Broadway and back on the frozen highways where he belongs.
Teen girls know him best as Chief Charlie Swan in the Twilight Saga, but we'd like to see him break out on his own as a cool-headed trucker. He can even bring the mustache, if he wants!
In The A-Team, the South African actor played a hotwired adrenaline junkie who still possessed mad skills behind the controls of a helicopter. His American accent wasn't bad, either. Can he do a Canadian one?
The last few seasons have seen Lisa Kelly join the Ice Road Trucker team, so why not get Bullock up in that cab to add a little toughness mixed with sex appeal? Maybe she can show Michelle Monaghan the right way to turn a truck-driver role into an Oscar.
As Kurt's dad Burt Hummel on Glee, O'Malley plays the working-class family man to a tee, plaid shirts and all, and he'd make an easy transition to dedicated trucker with a wife and kids back home. And with a Glee movie headed to theaters, he may already be destined for the big-screen big leagues!
Cuba Gooding Jr.
There don't seem to be many black truckers on the ice roads, but Hollywood prides itself on being an equal-opportunity employer (unless it's time to cast Avatar: The Last Airbender, of course), so we say get the guy who paid his Arctic dues on the set of Snow Dogs to put the parka back on. (If it still fits, that is.)
