I know you've been really stressed about what to get me for Hannukah, being that it's a mere five months away. Well, you can relax. I got a gander at the schmancy tenth anniversary edition of The Big Lebowski and oh my god. Want. Need. Must have. Look at the prettiness of it! Not only does it house the best movie ever created, it provides instant interior decorating mojo. Stick that thing on your coffee table and presto change-o you have a sweet new centerpiece/conversation starter. Put it on top of your toilet to give your bathroom an air of classiness. Position it prominently in your bedroom and watch as it works its magnetic bowling ball magic. Screw the rug. This thing will really tie the room together. The New York Film Festival has selected its opening-night film, the Palme D'Or-winning French film, Entre Les Murs (The Class). Reuters reports that the first French film in two decades to win Cannes' top prize tells a classroom story populated by real-life students and teachers making their acting debuts. It's a strange day when a place as snobby as the NY Film Festival selects a movie from the oft-hated inspirational teacher genre. I'm looking forward to seeing it because I'm a sucker for these movies. I've enjoyed so many over the years. To honor the occasion, here are three good teacher movies and two bad ones.
You heard it here first: I'm gonna be a star! Or, well, I should be anyway. If there was any justice in the world, I ought to be starring in the forthcoming documentary The Achievers about that elusive and enigmatic creature known as the Big Lebowski super-fan. Alas, the damned thing has already shot and wrapped. In fact, it's being screened as we speak (type?) at the Lebowski Fest in Louisville, Kentucky, which I know thanks to Pop Candy's exhaustive, up-to-the-minute coverage of what you'd think was the Cultural Nexus of the Millennium. Because, let's face it, that's exactly what it is. I am really hoping this film -- which boasts production credits from the dudes who brought us Riding Giants and Dogtown and Z Boys -- gets wide release and has festive, multi-city hoopla surrounding it because if it does I am so showing up to the premiere dressed as the Pomeranian Theodore Herzl. So don't even effing thing about it.
Have you ever seen those "WWJD?" bracelets or bumper stickers and wondered, "What would Jesus really do?" Well, at long last, I've found the answer to the question that has weighed on the minds of philosophers, theologians and crafty religious merchandisers alike. As it turns out, Jesus would go to Comic-Con. Jesus Christ, like many other superstars in "the biz", will be out promoting his movie at the multimedia convention in San Diego later this month.
Some people remember where they were when, like, JFK was shot. Or when 9/11 happened. Me, I recall where I was when The Big Lebowski came out. Sadly, I was not in line to buy tickets. I was at a boarding school in Michigan nodding off during my Constitutional Due Process class. Little did I know then what a cultural touchstone this filmic gem would be, and what a personal totem it would become for me. BLOG ARCHIVES
