David Carradine: 1936-2009

David Carradine is dead, and I feel guilty. I had nothing to do with it, of course; it happened in Thailand, and I'm in New York, as far as you or the authorities know. But I feel guilty nonetheless. Why? Because I have not seen nearly enough David Carradine movies. In fact, I have seen very few. How few? Three. And two of those are Kill Bill.

Granted, Bill in Kill Bill may have been his greatest role, but it's still a pitiful showing, considering that the man has been in over 100 movies and countless more TV shows, which I also have not seen. I really have no excuse, other than the fact that my interest in "cult" films has really only taken off in the last few years, and most of his films were definitely cult. In fact, I only saw Carradine's now-classic Death Race 2000 for the first time three years ago, but I loved it so much that I had no desire to see the remake. That movie alone should have sent me off on a Carradine spree: I should have immediately rented Q - The Winged Serpent, about Quetzalcoatl reincarnated in New York City. Or Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat. Or Deathsport, which actually looks a lot like Death Race. Or Karate Cop, which -- well, maybe I would have skipped Karate Cop.

The point is, David Carradine was great in Kill Bill, and he was great in Death Race 2000, and I wish I'd gotten a chance to see Crank 2: High Voltage before now, because I totally would have talked about how good he was in that, too. Instead, let's watch him fight Chuck Norris in Lone Wolf McQuade and honor his memory.
