It seems like over the last decade there's been a veritable cavalcade of movies about exorcisms, hauntings and paranormal activity, so it's hard to build up any enthusiasm for yet another one. But Sir Anthony Hopkins is a game-changer. Having such a fine actor in such a formulaic genre film, even one purportedly based on a true story (but aren't they all?) seems like a waste, but at the same time it's always fun to see the man really cut loose, as he did in Dracula and The Wolfman and a dozen other horror and thriller movies. Add this one to his list of masterful performances, because he single-handedly makes the movie a horror staple.
We've had Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, but now it's time for the scariest installment of all in the Child's Play series: REMAKE of Chucky! Chucky creator Don Mancini and series producer David Kirschner have announced a revamp that will take the franchise back to its horror roots. Including his first appearance 20 years ago in the entertaining Child's Play ("But Andy! I'm your friend to the end." "This IS the end!"), Chucky has slashed his way through five movies, never once answering the burning question: "Why didn't anybody just kick the damn doll?" He couldn't weigh more than 10 pounds! In honor of the role Oscar nominee Brad Dourif will be remembered for forever and ever, here are a few other killer dolls to creep you out.
As Universal Studios has updated each of their monster pictures over the past decade, they've necessarily changed them from pure horror films into more spectacular fare. The Mummy films have become more and more action-heavy, as was Van Helsing, although that one also buried itself in a steaming pile of camp. And while The Wolfman has its action scenes, it mostly hews very close to its classic horror roots, by which I mean that the story is fairly predictable and packed with cliches and cheap scares. However, since a scary mask isn't enough to scare anybody these days, the gore level has been elevated to match current audience tastes. This movie is rated "R" for a reason.
Anthony Hopkins. Robert De Niro. Kathy Bates. Vincent D'Onofrio. Billy Zane. What do these people have in common? They all freak us the hell out. Not on a day-to-day basis, of course, but each has had at least one truly memorable role in a horror film. These singularly terrifying performances have earned them all spots on our list of the Scariest Horror Movie Villains of All Time, alongside such luminaries as Freddy Krueger and Leatherface.
