If you have a brain -- and for your sake, I really hope you do -- there are moments in Journey to the Center of the Earth that will make you cringe. There's that whole "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the center of the Earth" thing (it's in the trailer; watch and find yourself embarrassed for Brendan Fraser). There is also an unnecessary -- and unnecessarily schmaltzy -- obligatory love story. And, because it sort of comes from out of nowhere, the cheesiness of that romance will catch you off guard and you won't even be able to brace yourself against the ridiculousness.

Inkheart is a movie of such potential, that takes such a cool idea -- a guy can make what's written in a book happen just by reading it aloud -- that you'll find yourself imagining the infinite possibilities: He could read Shakespeare and cause us all to have mistaken identities (or to die, if he chooses tragedy). He could read Austen and make us all eloquent and stubborn in love. Or he could read, say, Wilde, and we'd all be clever narcissists. [I'm not sure that's exactly how his power works, but I catch your drift. - Zach] But the possibilities go away rather quickly when you realize the writers have created a book, Inkheart, that will take up the bulk of the movie's screentime. And it will turn out to be an utterly meaningless book, with characters and plots we won't understand. Oh, and to top it all off, the movie itself will not follow its own rules or explain inexplicable occurrences.

Let's play a guessing game. What movie, if any, will unseat Will Smith's Hancock this weekend? Well, let's look at what's opening and make an educated guess. First up is the sequel to that OTHER superhero movie that's opening in July, Hellboy II. The first one made money, and is something of a cult classic, and (like Dark Knight) Hellboy II reunites its cast with the director of its predecessor. I loved the original film, but this in no way has the same drawing power as Will Smith. Fans of Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro will go, as will Hellboy fans, but that's not enough.

Riddle me this, riddle me that -- who can possibly defeat the big, bad Bat? Not Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, three yetis and an army of zombies, that's for sure. The Dark Knight topped the box office for the third week in a row, bringing in an additional $43.8 million, for a grand total so far of 394.9 million in the U.S. alone -- plus $200 million overseas. And the film has yet to open in Germany and Russia. That's Bruce Wayne folding money, son! Sadly, Batman will be defeated next weekend by the combined forces of the Green Hornet (Seth Rogen) and the Green Goblin (James Franco) in the stoner action flick Pineapple Express. C'est la vie!

Okay, so, thanks to the movies we all know how to kill vampires, right? You spear them with a wooden stake through the heart, or chop their heads off, or send them off to the beach at noon without a drop of sunblock. There's a veritable smorgasbord of kill-em-up choices! We also know how to kill werewolves: Plug those bad puppies with a silver bullet and then avert your eyes (while peeking through your fingers) as the fresh corpses inevitably morph back into buck-naked human beings. Traditional monster movies are full of ways to kill those baddies, but what do they say about mummy nullification? Seriously, I really need to know how to kill one, because according to the MTV Movies Blog, director Rob Cohen wants to follow up The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor with a fourth installment. And wait till you see who he wants for his next mummy.
