James Cameron's game-changing sci-fi epic Avatar comes out on DVD next month, but you may want to hold off on buying it, because the movie may get an extended version when it's re-released in IMAX 3-D this summer. After leaving those theaters early to make way for Alice in Wonderland, the studio wants to go back in there and make more money, and they're going to do that by having Cameron add in another ten minutes or so of footage. (They can't add too much more, due to projector restrictions.) Now, I don't know about you, but if I'm going to sit through another 2-and-a-half hours of Avatar to get ten more minutes of story, it'd better include one or more of the following deleted scenes.

Now that his long-gestating sci-fi epic Avatar has made over one billion dollars, director James Cameron has all the options in the world. He already had "eff-you" money from Titanic (which made $1.84 billion), but now he has "eff-you-and-the-exo-suit-you-walked-in-with" money. We called up his office to ask him what his next step was and, after being told politely that Mr. Cameron was currently aboard his personal space shuttle, came up with this list of possibilities on our own.

Who could have predicted that James Cameron's follow-up to Titanic would take 12 years to realize and would be entirely about blue aliens living on another planet? A lucky few got to see 20 minutes of preview footage in IMAX theaters across the country on Avatar Day, but the rest of you have had to content yourselves with the online trailer, which has a lot going on in it, a lot of which looks kinda familiar. Luckily, Omar G. and Pablo G. watched it as well, and they talk all about in in their latest video installment of "Trailers Without Pity"... or, rather, their blue, animated avatars talk about it, which makes the whole thing very derivative. Mark your calendars, because August 21 is Avatar Day! What's that, you ask? Is it some sort of new holiday where a benevolent bearded wizard gives you presents? Kinda. James Cameron doesn't sport a beard any more, but he is giving the world what he probably thinks is the greatest gift of all -- a free, 15-minute clip of his new, 14-years-in-the-making CGI spectacle movie, Avatar! Unfortunately, you need to go to an IMAX 3D or other 3D theater to see it. Because it can't be fully appreciated on the Internet or TV, of course. Which is apparently why absolutely zero footage has been released from this enormous movie that comes out in less than five months, aside from a few pieces of artwork and the footage that was recently shown at San Diego Comic-Con. Description of the footage ranges from highly positive to "lower your expectations". Based on what I've heard (a lot) and seen (very little), they're already pretty darn low.

It's Earth Day, and while a large percentage of Americans will be thinking about saving the planet, an equally large percentage will be thinking about leaving it. Those are the ones who will be rushing out to buy the blockbuster sci-fi epic Avatar on Blu-ray or DVD, which releases today instead of on a traditional Tuesday. Living up to the film's ecological themes, the film's studio has promised to plant a million trees around the world, but they've pruned the DVD a bit, as it won't have any special features or bonuses. We talked to the movie's producer, Jon Landau, to find out the thinking behind the release, what we can expect in terms of Avatar DVDs down the road, and what's next for director James Cameron's Titanic.

It's good to have the old James Cameron back after so long. Ignoring Titanic (as tricky as that sounds), it's been 15 years since his last action movie, so any movie that lets him play with robots and aliens and oversized machine guns is a reason to celebrate. Not the only reason, of course -- you want the movie to be watchable, right? Luckily, the movie is not only visually stunning (especially in 3D), it's actually a thrilling, if slightly familiar action tale. Not once did I roll my eyes or emit an audible groan at anything in the plot or dialogue, and I consider that a win in my book. Hell, I even got a little bit of rainforest in my eyes a couple of times, and I'm not one who's overly prone to crying... except during sentimental, uplifting, on-message sci-fi epics, of course.

As a movie about some people trying to overcome nature and escape a cave, Sanctum could have easily have made it to a cable network trying to present something a bit less whimsical than whatever SyFy was putting on that night. Based on the true and much less exciting story of documentary maker Andrew Wight, the movie tells the straightforward tale of a group of people stuck in a cave who must venture deeper into it to escape. As you might expect, the usual characters are here, from the hardened cave explorer Frank (Richard Roxburgh) who can't connect with his angry teenage son Josh (Rhys Wakefield) to the rich thrill-seeking sponsors of the expedition (Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Parkinson). With dialogue like, "There is no god down here!" the only thing keeping this movie from basic cable is producer James Cameron and his toys.

In the past, we've wondered if James Cameron's project, Avatar, could really live up to the hype. Even the trailer, released last week, left us feeling kind of meh. But on Friday, Cameron released 20 minutes of 3-D footage in IMAX theaters nationwide, and it was instantly apparent why Cameron felt an Avatar Day was necessary, and why non-3-D footage of the movie doesn't convey how amazing the movie looks. Not that the movie is some groundbreaking piece of cinema: the storyline is a sci-fi take on Dances With Wolves (with a dash of Soul Man), the designs for the aliens and the military vehicles are old hat, and some of the dialogue is horrible. But when you're watching naked, blue versions of Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington running around the jungle in high-definition 3-D, all of these worries melt away. Read on for a day-after description of the footage; I may be hazy on some details, but it's mostly the same as the footage that was shown at San Diego Comic-Con. And don't worry about spoilers, as a 3-D James Cameron informed us a the beginning that these are all from the first half of the movie.
