For Kids!, Reviews of Movies We've Actually Seen, We Call Do-Over, You Know
The Sorceror's Apprentice: Watch Disney Pull a Rabbit Out of Their HatThis movie had a lot of potential to go wrong. The original cartoon, starring Mickey Mouse, is a short-form classic, and turning it into a modern-day, live-action feature film, especially one starring the occasionally painful to watch Nicolas Cage, seemed like it was fraught with peril -- especially if you aren't a big fan of the films of Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure, Cool Runnings, 3 Ninjas). Despite the trailers' general awesomeness, I had recurring visions of a train wreck of Super Mario Bros. proportions. Luckily, the movie turned out to be a fun, funny adventure that more than lives up to the original's legacy -- in fact, the scene where they pay homage to the original is my least favorite. Sorry, Mickey.

Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, Girls on Film, Reviews of Movies We've Actually Seen
Welcome to the Post-Apatow World, She's Out of My League! These days, you can pretty much use the terms "buddy-comedy" and "Judd Apatow movie" interchangeably. The truth of the matter is, the guy has made a bunch of successful, hilarious (albeit sexist) films. While he's by no means the first person to pair a dorky guy with a lovely lady, there's no denying that the members of Apatow's mafia are some of the most beloved actors of the past decade. It should come to no surprise that one of his many protégés, Undeclared's Jay Baruchel, landed the starring role in She's Out of my League, the latest buddy-comedy to hit theaters. This film, however, boasts a different director, a cast of relatively fresh faces, and, remarkably, slightly less misogyny. Yay!

Hollywood To TWoP: Hello There!, The Biz
Something to Declare: Jay Baruchel Talks Crotch Shots, Nic Cage and She's Out of My LeagueThe latest slightly-misogynistic-but-not-enough-to-be-unfunny buddy comedy, She's Out of My League, is miraculously not directed by Judd Apatow, but does star one of his discoveries, Jay Baruchel (Undeclared, Knocked Up, etc.). He plays Kirk Kettner, a frumpy-yet-happy airport security agent who catches the eye of a flawless girl and spends the duration of the film struggling to understand why such a perfect creature would be interested in him. In League's most memorable scene, Kirk's friends convince him to "manscape" his crotch, and (spoiler alert!) while we don't get any full frontal action (a la Jason Segel in Forgetting Sarah Mashall), we do see a shot of Kirk's entire backside. There's also a pretty gnarly scene in which, through a sequence of only-in-a-rom-com events, an enormous dog licks Kirk's (clothed) crotch to no avail. At a press junket this weekend, we spoke with Baruchel about acting in these humiliating scenes, as well as his experience co-starring in the upcoming Nicolas Cage film, The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Seth "Sexy Man Boobs" Rogen is set to star in a brand new big-screen comedy about -- what else? -- the apocalypse. Rogen will re-team with his Superbad co-writer Evan Goldberg, and will co-star with fellow Apatow favorite Jay Baruchel in Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse, due to begin filming next year. Dick jokes with a biblical slant? I saw that movie already. It was called Dogma and it sucked holy balls. Oy, even the movie's title seems like a reference the Kevin Smith cannon, which might've been OK in 1994 but nowadays is shorthand for moronic, tossed off comedy dreck. Also, the script is based on a short film that Rogen shot last year, and we all know how awesome mini trailers stretched out to full feature length tend to be. Every single SNL cast member has staked a movie career on this formula and zero of them have won an Oscar so far. Then again, Rogen and his manchild co-horts have proven their ability to elevate that special breed of sophomoric humor to a higher level. So who the hell knows? I've been wrong before. Once. Back in 1973.
