Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, More On Movies, Movie Merchandise, Read All About It
The Five Best Essays in Joss Whedon: The Complete CompanionFrom Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Cabin in the Woods, writer/director Joss Whedon doesn't just create entertainment that can be enjoyed in the moment -- it can also be discussed and analyzed for years after its finished its television or theatrical run. Case in point: Titan Books' newly released Joss Whedon: The Complete Companion, a weighty compendium of short retrospective pieces (every section begins with a "Joss Whedon 101" to the particular work at hand), academic essays and interviews with such collaborators as actor Alexis Denisof and writers Jane Espenson and Tim Minear. Collected by the pop cultural survey site PopMatters, the pieces included in this tome span Whedon's entire career from the small screen to the big screen to the four-color pages of comic books. As with all anthologies, not every entry here is a winner. Some essays cross the line from admiring to flat-out hagiography, while others offer rote summary in place of interesting analysis. But combing through the book, we found five essays that are definitely worth a read. Check out our picks below and click here to order the book for your own personal Whedon library.

The Casting Conch, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Joss Whedon to Direct Avengers Movie? Whedon Stars, Assemble! You hear that? That's the sound of a million geeks crying out. But whether it's a cry of happiness, anger or confusion depends on the geek, and that geek's specific feelings towards Marvel comic books and Joss Whedon. Word has come down that Whedon, the creator of Dollhouse and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will direct the Avengers movie, and while many are intrigued at the possibilities, there are some who just don't see the logic. (To be fair, Whedon's an experienced Marvel Comics writer and also wrote and very nearly directed a Wonder Woman movie, so this isn't the craziest idea we've ever heard.) As for us, we're mainly wondering about which members of his talented acting stable may make appearances in the film. Although half the movie is already cast (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc.), there are plenty of other classic Avengers and Avenger villains that could be used to round out the story. Here are the past Whedon stars that we'd cast:

Vulture asks, "Where Are the Roles for Superwomen?" and I'd be lying if I didn't say I've been wondering the same thing.
Remember the Wonder Woman movie that was being written by Joss Whedon? I'm sure you at least remember when it fell apart. If you're curious what happened to that movie after Whedon's departure, it is still on. The script as it's currently being worked will be an "origin story," written by two men. Which is a change for the worse. I know Whedon is a man, but if a man has to write Wonder Woman, it would be better -- at least as far as feminism and girl power are concerned -- if it were helmed by the guy who created Buffy rather than Brent Strickland and Matthew Jennison, neither of whom have written a screenplay before. But I'll try to withhold judgment.

Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, Script From the Headlines!, The Casting Conch, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Wonder Woman Flies AgainMTV has managed to get its Lasso of Truth around Leonard Goldberg and Joel Silver, who are producing the first-ever Wonder Woman film. The project, which for a time had been in the hands of Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon (Whedon claims he quit the project because of a difference between he and Silver/Goldberg), is rolling along, according the producers, who are just "waiting for the script to come in." After the Whedon debacle (Whedon was set to both write and direct), the producers are taking the "old school" route, as they call it, and waiting for a script they commissioned to come in before taking that script to interested directors.
