Reviews of Movies We've Actually Seen, Taste the Reading Rainbow
Sherlock Holmes: You Can Go Holmes AgainPerhaps the most pleasantly surprising thing about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Homes is that it is by no means an origin story. Considering that there have been over a hundred Holmes films made since the start of the century, making this reboot an origin tale would have been a waste of film anyway -- especially when the excellent Young Sherlock Holmes already exists. But equally surprising is the fact that we are joining the characters of Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and John Watson (Jude Law) at the end of their partnership, when they already have a legacy of cases behind them, and the two are headed in different directions. The fact that Ritchie makes this "end-of-an-era" tale work for fans and laymen alike is a testament to the film's accessibility and to Holmes' enduring legacy.

Even the best of actors makes a bad movie now and again, and though we haven't seen it yet, it seems this week's non-Repo Man remake Repo Men (think of it as Repo: The Genetic Opera, but without the opera -- and the Sarah Brightman stabbing her own eyes out) is another bad movie on a fine group of likable actors' resumes. So in the spirit of terrible decisions and repossession, here are the roles we'd like to scrub from each of the movie's core cast's resumes.

So I finally saw Repo Men. And yep, it was quite violent, and yep, it really is Repo: The Genetic Opera minus the singing, and overall it was a forgettable if moderately enjoyable experience for me personally just because I love all things that have fake blood spraying everywhere. If you don't specifically love that no matter what the quality of the screenplay that facilitates it, you shouldn't see this. That isn't to say there's nothing to discuss about Repo Men, however.

Accidents Do Happen, Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, The Biz, The Casting Conch
The Gilliam-Dollar BabyWhy can't Terry Gilliam catch a break? As a former member of Monty Python, Gilliam should receive whatever he wants for life, a system Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and John Cleese have worked out with the British government, I believe. And yet the group's lone American still has to struggle and stretch to make his projects reality. Okay, so Gilliam makes strange movies. 12 Monkeys? Strange. Brazil? Stranger. And he has some bad luck, like when his movie about Don Quixote imploded (as documented in the film Lost in La Mancha), and when Heath Ledger, the star of his latest film, died in the middle of shooting. But he still managed to finish it, so why doesn't anybody want to distribute the thing?! Don't they know how important this man's work is? He was in Monty Python!

Booooyyyyy!, Let's Go To The Video!, Separate but Sequel, Taste the Reading Rainbow, The History, Trailer Trashing, We Call Do-Over, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Pics and Clips: Sherlock Holmes, Twilight, Punisher: War Zone, The Argentine and GuerrillaA multitude of new video clips, trailers, set photos and posters have leaked out over the weekend for various upcoming films, and this is your one stop to find it all.
Downey & Law, Crimefighters: First up, JustJared published photos on Friday of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes from Guy Ritchie's upcoming action film. He added photos on Sunday of Jude Law as Watson. They both look as dashing as you might imagine, all scruffy and in their period garb.

Booooyyyyy!, Taste the Reading Rainbow, The Casting Conch, The History, We Call Do-Over
Sherlock Holmes Has the Law on His SideDid you know that Sherlock Holmes never said "Elementary, my dear Watson" in any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's written works? The line pops up in movies, but the exact phrasing never shows up in the original stories. Why am I bringing this up? No reason, except that I just wanted to. In actual news, Variety is reporting that Jude Law is in talks to play Dr. John Watson to Robert Downey Jr.'s Baker Street detective in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. This will be a dramatic tale, not to be confused with the Judd Apatow-produced comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Sherlock and Will Ferrell as sidekick Watson. My first thought is, "Man, the movie theaters are going to be chock full of Sherlocks." My second thought is, "I kind of wish Law and Ferrell would switch places."
