So, you've probably been wondering what Alex Winter is up to. Winter exploded to superstardom as Bill S. Preston, Esquire, in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as their subsequent bogus journey, and then created The Idiot Box for MTV and Freaked for circus/weed/Randy Quaid enthusiasts everywhere. Since then, he's been directing TV shows and music videos, and he's about to direct a follow-up to his smash-hit superhero movie from last year. ...You have no idea what movie we're talking about, do you?
MTV asks, "Why did Love Guru bomb?" to which I respond, "Are you kidding me?!" Despite my shock (and a little bit of rage) that they'd even ask this question, let alone try to blame Justin Timberlake, I'm going to answer the question. It bombed because of:
- The first trailer, which includes short jokes, cowboy jokes, hockey jokes, offensive religious jokes, alligator "snappy" jokes (no, seriously), and even a penis joke. Lovely.
There are certain movies that should be put on a "Do Not Remake" list in order to preserve people's memories and enjoyment of them. Casablanca, for one. The Godfather, probably. Oh, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fans have been proving for over 30 years that there is no way to improve on it, if the fact that they keep going to see it and acting it out verbatim is any indication. And yet MTV Pictures is going to remake the film, using the original screenplay. At least the old fans will still be able to say the lines.
