What would Jim Henson think? The company that bears his name is making a Muppet movie for adults. I guess we all have to grow up sometime, but it raises several questions: Does this mean we'll finally get to see what the Great Gonzo does with those chickens? Will Fozzie Bear show us his "wakka-wakka," and will it be funnier than his jokes? Will we discover Bert and Ernie's Rainbow Connection, and will Kermit be depicted putting his pointy lips on some pork loin? Unfortunately, the answer is no. This is not Sesame Street After Dark; instead The Jim Henson company is making a film noir featuring puppets. Somewhere Raymond Chandler is going "What da EFF?!!!"
Look out, San Diego Comic-Con -- this past weekend, Disney held their own convention in Anaheim, and it had more Disney-related celebrity panels and announcements than you could shake a stick at. While a lot of the show was simply fan service -- merchandise, collectible pins, a look at new theme parks and attractions in the works, a Miley Cyrus concert -- there were actually a lot of great announcements about upcoming movies, and we thought we'd run down some of the bigger ones below.
File under "Cool TV Shows You Never Thought Would Be Made Into a Movie, But Kinda Always Hoped They Would": Fraggle Rock. That's right, the '80s show from the late, great Head Muppet himself, Jim Henson, is going to be made into a feature film. The musical will take the "core characters" from the show "outside of their home in Fraggle Rock, where they interact with humans, which they think are aliens." It's a lesson in cultural perspective, with puppets!
Somehow, the feature-film adaptation of the Jim Henson Productions TV show Fraggle Rock have ended up in the hands of the writer/director of Hoodwinked, and while we haven't gotten that far down our Netflix queue yet, we're pretty sure this movie will be awful. And now we're even more certain, since the Weinstein Co. has begun to look far and wide for an "edgier" screenplay. Is "edgy" the way to go? How do you make cute children's puppets "edgier," especially the already out-there Fraggles? Here are some ideas.
