Reviews of Movies We've Actually Seen, Sci-Fidelity, The Kongs of Comedy
Gentlemen Broncos: It's Like Napoleon Dynamite With a Plot and ActingApparently, it is impossible for Netflix to predict if someone will like Napoleon Dynamite. The movie is so quirky and strange that there are no movies where somebody can click "I like this" and have that translate to being a good match for Napoleon. Which is understandable -- after all, the movie has few jokes, little physical comedy, and most of its humor comes from awkward scenarios where unknown or nonprofessional actors wear hideous outfits and don't speak much. That said, a lot of people find it hysterical, particularly the bizarre vocal inflections of its lead characters. Some have even shelled out for the talking action figures. Director Jared Hess' latest movie, Gentlemen Broncos, has no action figures, sadly, but it does have a lot of similarities with Napoleon. However, the addition of a plot -- and three dynamic, talented actors -- turns it into a completely different beast.

I know it's a bold prediction, but I believe American Teen is the movie that's singlehandedly going to make documentaries cool again. Oh, right, they never were cool in the first place. Maybe in a certain geeky/political Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock crowd, they were considered cool, but not in general. Well, if people give it a chance, American Teen really could change that.

A Festival for the Rest...ival, Documentary?, The Biz, The Kongs of Comedy, What's Up
Shhh -- Michael Cera to Debut Secret Movie at SundanceIf you've never heard of the new Michael Cera comedy Paper Hearts, you're certainly not alone. The indie film, which will debut at the Sundance Film Festival, has gone under the radar almost everywhere -- you won't find it on movie databases, and despite the fact that it stars Cera and a host of other talent from Judd Apatow's stable, the film is going to Sundance looking for a distributor. Because of those factors, of course, the semi-secret film has already garnered pretty high expectations. The project is described as being part documentary, part scripted comedy about the real-life relationship between Cera and his girlfriend Charlyne Yi (who played the pigtailed stoner girl in Knocked Up) in which music plays a key element.

Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, Sci-Fidelity, The Casting Conch, The Kongs of Comedy
Flight of the CyborgsHere at MwoP.com, we love three things, and three things only: the HBO original series Flight of the Conchords, the movie Eagle vs. Shark and the Outback Steakhouse. Understandably, Kiwi komedian Jemaine Clement is one of our favorite people on the Earth. So when we heard that he was going to be in a new movie by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, we pretty much peed ourselves, even though our expectations were set way too high for Nacho Libre and we were understandably disappointed. (I mean, come on. Jack Black playing a luchadore? I went into it expecting it to be the Godfather of lucha libre movies... not realizing it already existed and was called Champions of Justice.)

Let's Blame the Media!, The Casting Conch, We Call Do-Over, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Nerds Are So 2004I got somethin' ta say. Everyone who wants to cash in on the "quirky nerd comedy" phenomenon that Napoleon Dynamite spawned -- um, four years ago -- needs to stop. As does the inevitable critical comparison that such films engender: "It's Napoleon Dynamite meets Shoa! With a dash of South Pacific!" Know who's not immune to my admonishment? Napoleon Dynamite. Or rather, the new movie Jon Heder is producing and slated to star in, Loudermilk, which is being touted as "Napoleon Dynamite if he had superpowers." Wow. That's original! Why not take two vastly overdone filmic trends and graft one on to the other to ensure that they're double-crappy?
