In horror movie circles, much is made of the genre's roots. Hatchet and its sequel were marketed as "old-school horror," and House of the Devil was released on VHS to celebrate its '70s feel. Perhaps it's a response to all of the soulless horror remakes -- Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left -- that have been coming out of late, which would make Insidious's existence even more interesting. Director James Wan and screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannell, who set a new template for how to tell horror stories with the first Saw movie and created one of the most profitable horror franchises in history, have traded knives for ghosts and made a scary-ass film that pays tribute to some of the creepiest movies of yesteryear, full of half-glimpsed faces, music stings and old-timey spectres.

If you didn't see today's movie DVD releases in the theaters, don't worry -- you didn't miss much. In fact, most of these movies are best enjoyed on DVD, for both financial and multi-tasking reasons. Put them on in the background as you crochet and/or drink.

Five years ago, when the first Saw came out, who could have guessed that a low-budget horror film starring Danny Glover, Dina Meyer and Cary Elwes at his most melodramatic would turn into a six-film franchise? Well, we're sure some people could have -- after all, low-budget horror movies make up the lion's share of film franchises. Still, the rate of one new Saw movie a year is impressive, and the fact that Saw VI comes out this month and they've already got Saw VII and VIII scheduled is incredible, if a no-brainer at this point. Still, the plot of the movies keeps getting more and more intricate, as do the deathtraps, so we thought we'd take a wild guess at where the franchise is going from here. Bear with us, it may get bloody.

Sony Pictures Animation has announced a new project in the form of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be SPA's first release in stereoscopic 3-D digital. Bob Osher, president of Sony's Digital Production division, described it as a movie about "food weather" and says that "food falling from the sky lends itself so well to 3-D." I'm sure this is supposed to be a kids' movie, considering that the article also makes mention of Open Season and Surf's Up, but I think this sounds like it has the makings of a Saw-like horror movie.
