Separate but Sequel, We Call Do-Over, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Spider-Man: How the Re-Boot Can Fix the FranchiseOn Monday morning, John Malkovich confirmed that he was in negotiations to play the Vulture in Spider-Man 4. By the end of the day, he was out of a job. That's because there is no Spidey 4 anymore -- director Sam Raimi walked away from the franchise when script problems (likely involving Raimi's love of the Vulture, and Sony's wariness of an old, bald villain) threatened the release date, and Sony has decided to re-cast and re-boot the whole damn thing. Raimi's three movies may have their flaws (especially the last one), but they were hugely popular, which makes this a sad day for a lot of people. On the other hand, we couldn't be more excited about a re-boot, even if the franchise is only ten years old. Here's what we'd like to see this time around.

Director? I Hardly Knew Her!, Separate but Sequel, We Call Do-Over, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Spider-Man 2.0: What We can Expect from the Director of (500) DaysSo the news is out that (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb will direct the Spider-Man reboot for Sony, plus two more installments after that. While the man only has one feature film under his belt -- and a hallucinatory musical rom-com, at that -- he's directed dozens of music videos since the late 1990s, which makes him as qualified as any music-video-director-turned-auteur. But what will the appropriately-named director bring to this blockbuster franchise, besides hundreds of terribly punny headlines? (Our favorite: "500 Days of Spiders.") We examined his relatively limited resume to see what we might expect in Spidey 2.0.

Separate but Sequel, The Casting Conch, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Web Auction Shows Lack of Common Spider-SenseAttention all Spider-Man fans: Start raiding your 401K and get thee to eBay. Sony Pictures, along with charity Stand Up to Cancer is auctioning off a trip to the Spider-Man 4 set on the auction website, even though the film has not yet had any talent attached, nor, I believe, is it yet written (though IMDb has James Vanderbilt credited with the screenplay). Regardless, Sony plans to release something in 2011, and if you're willing to drop enough scratch, you could be there to watch the movie magic happen.

It's a Major Award!, Script From the Headlines!, Separate but Sequel, The Casting Conch, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Does Iron Man Accept Money Orders?Have you always wanted to walk the red carpet at a glitzy movie premiere? Have you dreamed of meeting movie stars? Is it your fondest wish to hang out on the set of a huge movie production and be treated like a VIP? Were you unfortunately born without the acting talent or at least the family connections that would make these things possible? Well, good news! Thanks to Stand Up To Cancer, if you're the winning bidder on its eBay auction, you not only get to walk the red carpet at the Iron Man sequel's premiere, you get to be in the movie! ...Oh, and benefit cancer research, too.

Yesterday we ran down the four Spidey villains whose names had surfaced in connection with the next Spider-Man movie, although none of them have been confirmed. And while all of them --Carnage excepted -- are classic characters, Sam Raimi could do much better. After raiding our comic-book archive (and the occasionally brilliant comments on yesterday's article), we came up with four Spidey foes who would stand alongside the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, the Sandman and Venom as iconic and optically exciting antagonists. Read on, true believers!

Scary Monsters & Super Creeps, Separate but Sequel, You Got Comic Book in My Movie
Spider-Man 4: Four Villains Spidey May Have to FaceAfter a lot of speculation about whether there would be a fourth Spider-Man movie -- or if there even should be a fourth, after the dancestravaganza that was the last one -- all of the contracts have finally been signed and Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are returning as director and star. Hooray, we guess. (Seriously, no dancing this time, guys.) As with any superhero movie, confirmation of the film has kicked off endless discussions of what new villains should fight Spidey. Theories abound, with everyone jumping on every little word out of Raimi's mouth, but nothing is set in stone yet. Still, it's never too early to take stock of our options...
