I Voted for GORE!, Scary Monsters & Super Creeps
The Wolfman: Ten Anachronisms We Spotted in the MovieThe long-awaited remake of 1943's The Wolf Man bears many similarities to the original, but one major difference is that the film is set in the 1880s, rather than present day. While that gave the movie the opportunity to dress Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins up in period garb (not that the latter two needed any encouragement), it also created difficulties for the screenwriters, costumers and set decorators as far as making everything accurate to the time period. And while they did a pretty good job, a few 20th- and 21st-century artifacts snuck their way into the film. We watched the movie and found a bunch of anachronistic details that should have been edited out in post.

I Voted for GORE!, Scary Monsters & Super Creeps, We Call Do-Over
Halloween 2: What's Next for Horror Movie Remakes? With the sequel to Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween in theaters, the director has decided it's the perfect time to announce that he will next remake The Blob, the 1958 movie about a... well, a blob. From space. It's already been remade, in 1988 with Johnny Drama from Entourage, but we'll ignore that one if it means we'll get a grisly new sci-fi story from Mr. Zombie. Of course, Zombie doesn't have a monopoly on remaking old horror movies, and there are already a slew of re-imaginings in the works. We rounded up info on a few of the more high-profile ones, so you know which movies are currently getting hacked to bits in the editing room and which are just plain dead.

I Voted for GORE!, Reviews of Movies We've Actually Seen, Scary Monsters & Super Creeps, We Call Do-Over
The Wolfman: Just an Old-Fashioned Gore-FestAs Universal Studios has updated each of their monster pictures over the past decade, they've necessarily changed them from pure horror films into more spectacular fare. The Mummy films have become more and more action-heavy, as was Van Helsing, although that one also buried itself in a steaming pile of camp. And while The Wolfman has its action scenes, it mostly hews very close to its classic horror roots, by which I mean that the story is fairly predictable and packed with cliches and cheap scares. However, since a scary mask isn't enough to scare anybody these days, the gore level has been elevated to match current audience tastes. This movie is rated "R" for a reason.

Eight-year-olds prone to nightmares, beware: The Monster Squad -- the 1987 cult classic featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy that just got a second life on DVD -- is set for a remake. Being that in 1987 I was eight years old and prone to nightmares, I never saw it, but the story follows a group of kids who hunt down Dracula and his team of other monsters who are trying to take over the world. Rob Cohen, the producer behind XXX and Stealth, is negotiating with Paramount over the rights. [Maybe this time, they can get Universal in the mix and use actual Universal Monsters like the Creature, rather than generic placeholders like "Gill-Man." - Zach]

My self-imposed ban on stories about vampires and/or werewolves is officially over, because... well, because I found some cool news about werewolves and vampires. It seems that the upcoming Wolfman movie is only the first in a series of films designed to bring back the classic "Universal Monsters" of old, and both Dracula and the Invisible Man are slated for new film incarnations: a prequel and a sequel, respectively. In other news, there will also be a Mummy 4... but let's move on.

I swear to God that this is my last blog post about vampires, werewolves or Witchblade for a while. I know, I talk about one or the other pretty much every day in the Moviefile, but they're all pretty awesome, and we just happen to be living at the right time to be fans of these things. And since I just happened to stumble across a couple of news items involving werewolves and vampires, I thought I'd clue you all in. If you're not interested, scroll down and read about Jennifer Lopez; if you are, then read on...if you dare!
