As someone who occasionally has big, bushy muttonchop sideburns, people may think I'm a bit biased towards Wolverine. But while I've read X-Men comic books since junior high, it wasn't until Hugh Jackman played him that I really took to the guy. Jackman gave him a humanity and vulnerability that I could never really see in the comics, which is why I'm psyched that they finally got around to making a solo Wolverine flick, even if it has the clunky title X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The first trailer debuted this past weekend in front of The Day the Earth Stood Still, and while it has less Sabretooth than the earlier San Diego Comic-Con footage did, it still looks awesome. These are the five things I liked most about it, and the five things I liked the least.

In comics and on the screen, Wolverine has been the most popular X-Man for years. In fact, it could be argued that the first two X-Men movies were de facto Wolverine films. But now he's making it official, with the first movie to actually put his name on the marquee, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since his origin is one of the most mysterious (read: sexy) things about him, all signs point to this being a pretty amazing movie. But it's hard to tell from just the trailer, unless you're an über-nerd with a stack of Wolverine comics in your closet. I come bearing some comic book movie news for Moviefile readers. Back in August, I wrote about the slightly disturbing possibility of a fun-n-bouncy X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Back then, the whispers on the wind were saying that Fox CEO Tim Rothman went so far as to have one of the dark, moody sets repainted to be something altogether brighter. If these rumors were giving you unwanted visions of a cheery Logan, an interview at Coming Soon with producer Lauren Shuler Donner reveals that the movie is actually "darker and sadder and it's kick-ass."

With a big box office weekend looming (Paramount hopes) with the opening of Iron Man tomorrow, the stars of other superhero franchises are coming out of the woodwork to promote their own upcoming projects. Dark Horizons has both Hugh Jackman of the X-Men offshoot X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Brandon Routh of Bryan Singer's new Superman series out seeing who can out-superhero whom on the publicity circuit.

I'm gonna make this brief because I feel like I've contributed quite enough bile to today's various blogs. But I'm real perplexed as to why the Oscars have elected to have Hugh Jackman host this year's telecast. They'd already made it clear that they were looking to cut down on the "funny" bits, and with this announcement, they've preeeetty much confirmed that this year's show is going to be even more boring than in years past. Everyone knows that the best parts of the Oscars are the red carpet fashions and the cheesy hosts' cheesy attempts at comedy. They've just done away with half the reason I watch. What if god forbid this year's bevy of starlets get themselves awesome stylists and nary a sartorial trainwreck shows itself on the pre-show? WTF am I gonna have to look forward to (making fun of)?

In many ways, Cleopatra was a woman ahead of her time. Through political machinations, she sought to secure her place in history, and if she could have seen into the future, she would have seen that her fame lived on, even if her empire did not. She would have also seen that she'll be getting the high-tech treatment as Steven Soderbergh plots to bring her story to the big screen. According to Variety, the director is planning to tell the story of Egypt's final pharaoah as a rock musical -- and it will be in 3-D. If she'd known this would some day be her fate, Cleo may have opted for a life of obscurity. [I think we're eight years beyond that. Have you seen Cleopatra 2525? - Zach]

By now, even jaded, nit-picky Star Trek fans have decided to either like the new movie along with the rest of the world or dislike it just to be contrary. Whichever you've chosen for yourself, congratulations! You either are or are not, in the Vulcan parlance, a dickhead. Now we can set about the business of figuring out which actors we want to join this merry band in the next installment. There's only a few more crew members left to show, but there are plenty of rogues, aliens and monsters to cast! Here's who we wanna make a stardate with.

The geek community is currently peeing themselves with worry because the cast and crew of X-Men Origins: Wolverine has apparently returned to Vancouver to do some re-shoots. Talk of interference in the film by 20th Century Fox has led to speculation that the movie is being kiddie-fied. Still others are claiming that the studio has realized that they have Ryan Reynolds in their movie, and are expanding his presence as mercenary Deadpool. (understandable, since he barely appeared in the trailer.) However, we have our own theories about the re-shoots, which you should check out after the jump.
