Just what you've been waiting for! Variety announced today that High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale is currently in talks with United Artists to star in a remake of the 1989 musical Teen Witch. The original, which had started as spin-off/sequel to the much more well-remembered Teen Wolf (but didn't end that way), tells the story of Louise Miller, an unpopular girl who finds out on her 16th birthday that she's a descendant of the witches of Salem and has inherited their powers. No word yet on whether Zac Efron is in talks to make an appearance as the captain on the basketball team with a little extra hair.
Tisdale seems to be similarly blessed, as only witchcraft can explain the undeniable success of the High School Musical series, in addition to the report from Variety that Tisdale has also signed a first look deal with American Idol producers FreemantleMedia North America, which will actively look for projects to develop around the teen. I'm sure Ruben Studdard and Justin Guarini are just totally thrilled for her.
It seems odd that the first project in discussion is one to remake a movie that no one remembers that was sort of a musical and sort of a fantasy, and really had a better run when it starred Melissa Joan Hart and was on TGIFriday. Luckily, Var also reports that no script has yet been written for the picture, so I'm safe from throwing up a little bit in my soul for at least another year.
One can only hope that when she's finished shooting the project she can find the time to film High School Musical installments 4 through 35.
