Rose Red: McGowan to Play Sonja
If you're a fan of Conan the Barbarian, you're likely a fan of Red Sonja, his female counterpart, also created by Robert E. Howard. However, you're likely not a fan of her 1985 movie starring Brigitte Nielsen. Despite featuring Ah-nuld as a less-exciting warrior named Kalidor, it was campy as hell, with a kid sidekick and some fat comic relief, and the final nail in the coffin was that it deprived Sonja of her trademark steel bikini and gave her a ridiculously bad hairdo. Well, Rose McGowan has apparently been cast as the new Sonja, and if anyone was ever born to wear a steel bikini, it was her. (Sorry, Jennifer Lopez.)
I'm still really confused as to why they hired Sienna Miller -- a blonde, freckled British girl -- to play the raven-haired, Eastern European killer the Baroness in the new G.I. Joe movie. She's pretty, sure, but dark-haired women are pretty, too -- why not give one of them a chance to play one of the all-time dark-haired icons? Sunny, blonde British girls should play sunny, blonde British parts, like...oh, I don't know, maybe Maid Marion in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood movie?
Is it really newsworthy that the Vatican won't let The Da Vinci Code prequel Angels & Demons film in Rome churches? I mean, the Catholic Church hated the books and the first movie, so why would the Vatican be expected to let Ron and Tom run around their churches shooting another "godless" film? The answer is they wouldn't. Thus this is a non-news news item.
Guy Ritchie, director of Snatch and wife -- sorry, husband of Madonna, will be directing an adaptation of a new Sherlock Holmes comic, featuring a reimagined, "more adventuresome and less stuffy" version of the detective than has been previously seen on film. Which means it could very well be closer to the original original Sherlock Holmes stories -- he's kind of a badass in them. I wonder if anybody in Hollywood has read them...
