Super Bowl 2011: The Best and Worst Movie Trailers

The Super Bowl is known for its commercials, but while a new Doritos ad can be hilarious, it isn't exactly news. What is news are the latest movie trailers for some of this year's biggest movies -- sometimes the first trailers ever released! We watched the whole game to make sure we didn't miss a movie (Mindy covers all the regular commercials here), and rated the best and worst -- read on for video and commentary!

Best: Captain America: The First Avenger

This trailer spent its limited time where it counted -- on Cap's origin story as a puny, good-hearted Army reject who volunteers for a super-soldier experiment. It lets you know what Cap's about, before revealing him in his costume, then we get flashes of Cap punching a submarine, Cap fighting guys with flamethrowers, the Red Skull tearing off his mask to reveal the skull beneath, and a jokey segment that did double duty by showing off his indestructible shield. Hopefully, director Joe Johnston can deliver on that trailer's awesome.

Worst: Super 8

With only 30 seconds to work with, a lot was spent on pretty generic Spielbergian disaster-action, and we didn't really learn much about the movie. There's a train explosion, something busting out of a military transport, and then people are getting dragged away by something. Also, more explosions. We're sure this Steven Spielberg-J.J. Abrams jam will be great, but the commercial was pointless. Still, Kyle Chandler! Woo-hoo!

Best: Fast Five

The Rock gets to take center stage in this one, suiting up to take down Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and getting the best line: "Do not let them near a car." Cue car stunts aplenty, and the two stars get to wrap things up by driving a car off a cliff, then jumping out of it.

Worst: Thor

While some of the dialogue is good -- Anthony Hopkins reads off the inscription on Mjolnir, and Natalie Portman hopes that Thor isn't crazy (a common worry in the comics) -- the visuals are all action bits we've seen before or shirtless shots of Chris Hemsworth. Bo-ring.

Worst: Just Go With It
Not only did we get an instant replay of star Brooklyn Decker's, uh, upper Deckers coming out of the water (and her bikini), we got Adam Sandler's nutshot, and a tip to the guys watching to tell their girlfriends that the movie is a romantic comedy. Yes, trick your girlfriends into seeing it, like this trailer is attempting to trick you!

Best: Cowboys and Aliens

Finally, a little bit more of the alien ships in the daylight! Plus, Daniel Craig gets to kick a little ass, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde takes her clothes off. Just go with this one, fellas.

Worst: Transformers: Dark of the Moon

While we weren't expecting high art, the first TF3 teaser told us more about the plot than this one did, and all that one showed was astronauts finding a Cybertronian ship. This time, it was all about showing off the hot robot-on-robot action, as we got quick flashes of Bumblebee looking heroic, Optimus Prime slicing through Decepticons, metal dragons descending on humans, Decepti-blimps raining down missiles, and two cars crashing together and transforming in mid-collision. It's bad enough we felt like we were watching a car wreck, but Bay had to go and put an actual one in there?

Best: Battle: Los Angeles

The trailer doesn't need much set-up ("Aliens have landed!") before it gets into battleships exploding, and massive alien ships seemingly rising up from the ground. Hope it can make people forget about Skyline, because right now, that's all I can think about.

Best: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The extended version of the trailer (above) shows us a bit more than what actually aired, but both had plenty of Johnny Depp being ridiculous, Penelope Cruz as the new Keira Knightley, zombies, pirates and Ian McShane as Blackbeard the Pirate. As long as it's a fun standalone like the first movie, and not part of a less-than-epic saga like the last two, we're in.

Worst: Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom
I think even small children realize that "We Will Rock You" has been overused as a song. Not even as a song in movie trailers, but as a song in general. And while "We Will Wok You" is a funny slogan, the trailer was mainly just Po mugging for the camera and fighting. One of those things is okay.

Best: Limitless

Nothing we haven't seen in other trailers, but a little Kanye goes a long way, and it does a great job of selling the film's premise and making it look pretty sexy. Why isn't Bradley Cooper playing a superhero yet?

Worst: Mars Needs Moms
Creepy animated Seth Green. Creepy animated Dan Fogler. A planet full of creepy animated aliens. Send the kids to see it with your spouse, or a grandparent.

Best: Rango

Again, nothing we haven't seen in the other trailers a dozen times before, but a great collection of funny and quasi-dramatic moments. Perhaps a bit too much time dedicated to the creepy mole schoolgirl, but the movie seems to be comfortable with creepy.

Worst: Rio

We still aren't sure how much Jesse Eisenberg-as-a-macaw we can take, but now it looks like he has a scene where the music takes over his body and he dances a rumba. And Anne Hathaway sings. This is not getting better, people.
