Do you love movie trailers as much as we do? How about that Quantum of Solace trailer? Pretty cool, huh? Well, we feel that trailers deserve a little more attention than the minute-thirty we usually give them. While we'll occasionally write about one that grabs our fancy, some of them are worth serious analysis, by seriously funny experts. Which is where the first installment of our new weekly video series, Trailers Without Pity comes in. Brother vloggers Omar and Pablo Gallaga have broken down the Quantum trailer to point out the bizarre, the confusing and the sheer ridiculous in the latest Bond commercial.
Check out their Quantum theories here, then keep checking back to hear the Gallagas' opinions of trailers for Fast & Furious, Watchmen and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button!
There's something fantastic going on at the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia this week. According to Variety, directors at Sitges are debuting previews for nonexistent movies. The faux trailers are part of a competition that launched last month at Teaserland.com. Would-be directors have entered the race, as have more seasoned pros who've submitted trailers for sequels of some of their previous movies. The previous movies exist; the sequels don't.
Ah, the fun you could have with the new trailer for W., Ollie Stone's biopic of our current president! The latest trailer's use of scenes, music and credits can all be pulled apart for your enjoyment. The strangest thing about it is that it seems to be missing Stone's penchant for controversy. Sure, it has several scenes with different film stocks, like Natural Born Killers, and scenes of binge drinking set to George Thorogood songs, but other than that, it comes off rather ordinary. Until you start reading between the lines, that is.
Are you sitting at work, watching the minutes tick by until you're finally free for the weekend, wondering how you'll occupy yourself for the next two days of work-free bliss? Are you thinking about risking the wrath of your significant other to go see The Dark Knight for the fifteenth time? There's not a lot new coming out this week in theaters. No new comic book hero movies, no new sci-fi epics, and no new horror villains to make you scream... unless you count Nicolas Cage's scary-ass hairdo in Bangkok Dangerous. Screw it. You might as well be a slacker and waste away the weekend on the Internet. Here are a few things to help your eyes glaze over as you stare at the computer screen:
When watching movie trailers, audiences are usually so entranced by the images they're shown that few people think about the voice that's telling them what the movie's about. Of course, if the voice is doing its job right, you don't have to think about it; only a bad voice-over jars you out of the scenes you're watching. A good voice-over will make you think some omnipotent deity is inside your head, filling you in on the details, and more often than not, Don LaFontaine was that omnipotent deity. Sadly, he passed away on September 1, which means he just got a lot more omnipotent, and one step closer to deification.
Have you guys watched the effing Red Band trailer for Zack and Miri Make a Porno yet? No? What the hell are you doing reading this post? Go! Go watch it! Omg OK, so you watched it. Can we discuss why this looks So. Frigging. Awesome?!
The Internet has brought us many, many things, including unlimited second-hand information, free pornography and numerous forums in which to express our socially unacceptable opinions without fear of reprisal. But one of the greatest things it's given us is the fake movie trailer. Sometimes used for harm (like the ones that claim to be legitimate trailers for in-production films), they can also be used for good, such as showing the world (and Hollywood producers) what your favorite cartoon or comic book might look like as a movie. Well, here are three of the coolest recent fake trailers I've found, and I wanted to share them with you.
Okay, so I'm usually sooo anti kids playing adults (with the obvious exception of Bugsy Malone), as I find the whole conceit to be cutesy and annoying and gay beyond words. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd think I might sort of hate kids, based on my visceral reaction to any and all Kidz Bop commercials. But I have to say, this Dark Knight trailer re-enactment starring a gaggle of brothers who all appear to be under the age of twelve, is a wee (Tee hee! Get it? Wee!) bit adorbz. Sure, the little boy who plays the Joker is borderline frightening, in a pre-adolescent John Wayne Gacy sort of way, but that's what makes it so damned heartwarming! Kropinak brothers, I salute you!
Man, today started off crappy. Humidity, rain, and an early morning trip to the wilds of the Upper East Side to get one's ass X-rayed is not a recipe for an awesome Wednesday. But after a grilled cheese sammich and some much-needed rocking out to M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," things started looking up. And then I saw a trailer for the upcoming David Wain/Paul Rudd chucklefest Role Models and presto change-o: Best Day Ever! What's that you say? Ken "Wait For Me Abby Bernstein!" Marino shares writing credits? Sign me the bleep up!
As I've mentioned 12 to 15 times, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing/throttling/spooking Michael Cera when he happened innocently into my local dive bar to film a scene from the forthcoming movie Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. So I feel a strange protective ownership over the film. This, coupled with my age-inappropriate love for Cera, made me uniquely stoked to watch the trailer [via Videogum] for said movie, which hits theaters in October. But -- get ready for the haterade -- I am gonna have to say that after watching the thing, I am super not impressed.
