The Mouse Diversifies

by admin June 17, 2008 12:07 pm
Disney's in the news today. Variety reports that the Mouse went to China recently and came back with a deal for "rights in all territories" for a new family-friendly pic. Not to be outdone by DreamWorks and Jack Black's admittedly impressive kung fu, Disney will offer its own panda fare to satisfy your "aww, isn't that sweet" tooth. The live-action Touch of the Panda is the story of an orphaned boy who rescues a young panda. Did I say "sweet"? Your overpriced theater Milk Duds will taste like lemons and battery acid by comparison!

On the serious side of things, the movie was shot in Sichuan Province, which was recently hit by deadly earthquakes. Touch, although not part of Disneynature's roster, fits in with the new production house's ecological bent. Here's hoping the film (and its revenues) finds some way to benefit the hard-hit region. According to the report, audiences will get their chance to see the panda "around the time of Chinese New Year, in January or February."

In other family film news, Disney has also bought John Sullivan's Science Fair, a "family adventure," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Comparing it to Night at the Museum, the article describes a plot about a kids' science fair where the projects come to life. Considering that at least half the projects at any given science fair were already once alive, that shouldn't be too difficult. Most everyone knew that one kid in school who gave caffeinated soda to his gold fish. Who wouldn't cheer to see the fish coming back to haunt a little brat like that? Forget the papier mache volcanos! Let's see all the tortured fishies and pinned-down insects resurrected for a little payback.
