Thy Kingdom Comics, It Will Be Done

It seems that Disney is tired of not having a superhero to call their own. What's Darkwing Duck, chopped goose liver?

Looking to get in on the comic-book-adapting game, the Mouse has hired a comic writer, a businessman and a Zappa to form Kingdom Comics, at once a clever play on Disney's own Magic Kingdom and the Biblical end of the world. (Nice!) It seems the new division will scout out graphic novels to publish that can be adapted into feature films, as well as creating graphic novels from Disney properties, which they can then turn back into feature films, thereby starting the cycle anew.

So who will be choosing these graphic novels to publish? Christian Beranek was the founder of Silent Devil comics, which published such gems as Dracula vs. King Arthur and Super Frat -- just the kind of highbrow material Disney should be on the lookout for. Harris Katleman was president and CEO of 20th Television from 1980-1992, where he oversaw development of In Living Color and NYPD Blue, making him uniquely suited for developing comics for children. And Ahmet Zappa is...a Zappa, as in son of Frank, brother of Dweezil and Moon Unit. Oh, and he's writing the movie version of Fraggle Rock. So if you don't hate him already, you will.

This. Will. Be. Awesome. Like a massive train disaster is awesome.

If they were smart, they would take the Scarecrow comic strip by Bret Blevins that ran in the now-defunct Disney Adventures and reprint that in graphic novel form. Blevins is a comics master, and since it's based on the 1915 Dr. Syn series of books -- which Disney made into a TV mini-series in the 1960s -- it's totally ripe for a remake. Of course, I seriously doubt they'll do that, instead seeking out more comics where public domain monsters fight public domain heroes or developing books where Chip and Dale develop super powers and fight a drunk-with-power Monterey Jack, who keeps Gizmo on a chain by his throne of cheese.

I would totally read that last one, by the way.
