It's hard to imagine, despite the presence of the ever-talented Steve Carell, that Get Smart will be any good. Sure, it's based on Mel Brooks's funny,'60sTV show of the same name. And it looks, judging from the poster and the trailer, as if it's sticking to the spoof/satire roots of the show. But it always feels like movie studios and actors must be scraping the bottom of the barrel when they can't find something fresher to tackle than an old TV show. Those remakes rarely turn out well (think Mod Squad, Dukes of Hazzard, or Starsky & Hutch).
Then again, did I mention Steve Carell is in it? And has the guy done much of anything that hasn't been hilarious? I mean, he made produce hilarious back in the day on The Daily Show, remember?
Still, there is that trailer, which ... has a joke about bones being too crunchy to make good pudding. Disturbing? Yes. Funny? Not even a little bit. But there are a couple of genuinely funny moments too, including faithful homages to the TV series though (the hall of doors, Cone of Silence, "99," and more), which could end up redeeming the movie. Sometimes remakes try to be too different from the series and they end up losing all of the things that made the original charming. Even if it's funny, though, Get Smart is going to have a tough time competing with the hilarity of current secret-agent spoof OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies. There just might not be room for two of those.
