If you've watched any television in the last several months or gone to see a single movie, you've probably seen a Hancock trailer. And let's be honest: The trailer makes the movie -- and what could very well be an interesting concept: a bumbling, drunken mess of a superhero -- look more silly (drunken flying in a beanie!) than sleek. But I'm pretty sure you and everyone else you know will go see this movie, because ... well, don't we all love a good twist ending? This one promises a doozie involving Charlize Theron (which is why she's been so scarce in promotional materials).
Even if I didn't already love Will Smith (yes, I said it: I love him. I even saw Bad Boys II in the theater; that's how much I love him) and like director Peter Berg more and more all the time, I'd want to see this one just so that I could find out the surprise before someone ruined it for me. Because you know it's probably already spoiled somewhere on the internet; and because the surprise is already killing me (Is she a hero too? Is she the antihero/villain? Or is it something else?), I won't be able to hold out long without seeking out the answers.
In other words, I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I think Will Smith is one of the few guys who can pull off this transformation -- especially since he's sort of played both pre- and post-makeover versions of Hancock in recent years. So what if the early reviews have been mixed? I'm still excited to see Jason Bateman help turn down-on-his-luck Pursuit of Happyness Will Smith into badass I Am Legend Will Smith. (And you've got to love that it's presented as if a superhero would need a PR guy; because he totally would, but they never get into that in Batman or Smallville).
