You probably haven't even heard of Boy A, yet it won all sorts of prestigious awards at last year's BAFTAs. That's the British version of the Academy Awards, for those who don't already know. And the fact that it won all sorts of those (though they were TV awards, not film; apparently it was a TV movie, but don't hold that against it; they're better in Britain) and most of us still haven't heard of it probably says something about how ethnocentric we are here in the U.S.: Our awards matter, but no one else's do.
But back to Boy A: It's based on the British novel of the same name. Both are about a child criminal who is released as an adult and trying to start over with his life. Then he performs one act of kindness, which brings him back into the public eye and turns everyone he'd met since he'd been released against him. He loses his job, his friends, presumably his girlfriend. You know, it's wonderful that these people would hold something he did as a child against him now that he's put it behind him. That's the sort of thing that just might drive a person back to a life of crime. For some reason, it reminds me of Sleepers, but let's hope he doesn't go seek retribution on anyone who might have hurt him while he was in prison. Sounds like he's got plenty of people on the outside to take his anger out on.
