This is that little indie about an upstate New York woman who turns to smuggling illegal immigrants across the border when her good-for-nothing husband runs off and gambles away the money for her doublewide trailer. I know it sounds like a country song, but there's some promise with this one: First, it stars Melissa Leo, she of Homicide: Life on the Street. And then there's that small matter of it winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Frozen River looks like the type of movie that will make you cold just watching it (as if the title doesn't give that away), what with every character bundled up and crunching snow and the fact that they're smuggling illegal immigrants across a frozen river. It's sort of like the renegade version of Ice Road Truckers, but possibly even more bleak -- if you can imagine that -- and more desperate. The trailer features snow, desperation, ice, law-breaking -- It's just the sort of movie people flock to see in the summer, right?
