Oh, how easy it was to scoff at the idea of turning the Broadway musical hit Mamma Mia! into a movie. I mean, it's a musical made up of ABBA songs; how good could it ever be?
That could have been the end of it, but then Meryl Streep signed on. And Colin Firth. And Pierce Brosnan. Oh, and Stellan Skarsgard. Amanda Seyfried (who knew Lily Kane could sing, anyway?) Need I go on? Because really, I could. The point is: that cast! That cast is something magical.
The basic gist of the story is that Amanda Seyfried's always wanted to have her dad walk her down the aisle. Trouble is she doesn't know him. Even worse, her mom (Meryl) isn't sure which of three guys is the dad. They all come calling, though, thinking it's them. There will be confusion and hilarity and probably a sort of sappy resolution (although when your choices for father -- or mate -- are Stellan, Pierce, and Colin, must one choose, really?), but you've got a cast who can sell it as much as anyone would ever be able to. That's got to count for something.
