The world needed another Mummy movie about as much as it needs, well, any cheesy, big-budget action sequel. But thanks to Brendan Fraser's need for a regular income, we get The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Rachel Weisz is out this time -- maybe she realized she's sort of above this -- but in her place we have Maria Bello. Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh also have joined the cast.
The trailer is about as silly and unbelievable as you'd expect, with CGI creatures and effects and weather. I'm not really going to criticize the movie too much, because it's relatively harmless summer fun. I would like to point out to whoever wrote the voice-over copy for the trailer that "beyond death" and "beyond imagination" are not necessarily selling points for anyone I know. Maybe "imaginative" works, but I don't really want to go see something that is so out there it's "beyond imagination." On the other hand, I think the movie might be giving itself too much credit if it thinks it's so revolutionary as to be beyond our imaginations.
One more thing I take exception to: the title. Must it be a thousand words long? Between this, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the movies are ending before people are done reading the title. Note to sequel title writers (if that is even a job): Short and sweet is best. For example? Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hellboy and The Mummy -- or even The Mummy Returns. Why make it so long people can't even remember it? I just don't care to have major plot points revealed in the name of the movie.
