Let the Right One In

Let the Right One In I was just thinking that we needed a vampire movie to come out soon. I mean, there's nothing else about vampires going on right now in the world, is there? Oh, right, there's Twilight, and True Blood, and even Dark Path. But in case that's not enough vampires for you, there is also Let the Right One In. The thing that sets this one apart, though, particularly from Twilight, which we is already shaping up to be a mega-hit a month before its release, is that it's truly dark. Not faux-dark, where the girl kisses the vampire, and we all get warm fuzzy feelings because he's a good guy. [Ed's note: Also, it's in Swedish -- Lauren] You know, because Edward Cullen is always Angel, never Angelus -- a vampire with a soul. No one you have to worry about. Oh, and he's hot and wonderful, and brings Bella out of her shell.

Anyway, Let the Right One In is really really not that movie. It's about a 12-year-old boy who has no friends until he meets his neighbor girl. They bond, while around them people also start to die mysteriously. He suspects she's probably a vampire, but he loves her anyway -- not because she's the good type of vampire like Edward. She isn't. She is a big-time murderer. It's probably going to break our hearts. This sort of tragedy is the reason stories about humans falling in love with vampires exist in the first place, isn't it? I want Twilight to be more like that.

I saw this last month at Fantastic Fest in Austin. It was one of the staff's overwhelming favorites out of 100+ films they screened, and just about everyone who saw it also loved it. Me? I was a little more "meh" about it. The Swedish setting is kind of neat, and it is interesting that there's no ambiguity about the girl-vampire. She's not particularly conflicted--she just does what she has to in order to survive. What I did like was the suggestion that she has motives other than friendship in striking up a relationship with the protagonist.
