The concept of The Dukes is not a concept many of us will be rushing out to see writ large on the silver screen: And that is a story of some washed-up singers-turned-mobsters trying to break back into the music business. It stars Chazz Palminteri, Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Davi (also known as the bad guy from The Goonies), who also directed. There are appearances in the trailer alone from numerous other "Hey! It's that guy!" types, from The Sopranos actors to Jan from The Office, all of them sure to make it worth a look. Oh, and during the trailer, Davi even ends up in a tomato suit at one point. You've got to love that.
The problem is, as fun as it looks, there's nothing that compelling about a bunch of over-the-hill, out-of-their-prime, actors making a movie about a bunch of over-the-hill, out-of-their-prime singers/mobsters. Especially when a couple of the actors were never anything to write home about in the first place. And some of them are nothing more than the poor man's version of a not-even-that-well-known TV actor. For example, there's an actor in that trailer who is trying so hard to be Bobby "Bacala" from The Sopranos, but he's younger and dorkier and just ... not him. The movie's tagline should have been: "Like Dreamgirls, but without the girls. Or the dream."
